Speaking with Total Film, director Guillermo del Toro talks about two of his upcoming projects. A few months ago, it was reported that he will be co-writing a sequel to this summer's Pacific Rim with original screenwriter Travis Beacham, though it was unclear if he would return to the director's chair. Here, del Toro discusses learning more and more about the universe of the sci-fi thriller and making a follow-up work. "Travis and I have been working on it. We co-wrote the screenplay on this first one, and now we’re hard at work at doing the second one. We want to take however long it takes to really find out the idea and try to bridge something that really makes the mythology roll. And in the meantime, I’m going to shoot Crimson Peak, which is a ghost story. The great thing about Legendary is they’re willing to take it to completion in the right way. They’re giving us the leeway. Imagine that we’re generating the comic book. We’re learning more about the [Pacific Rim] world we’re creating day by day."

Del Toro then reveals some new details for his upcoming ghost story film Crimson Peak, which will also be produced by Legendary Pictures. Last we heard, Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim) were in talks for the lead roles, and that an early 2014 start date was being eyed. "It’s the turn of the century," he says. "So it’s at the turn of the century and half of the movie takes place in America, and the other half takes place in a crumbling mansion in Cumbria. And basically it’s a ghost story and gothic romance, trying to subvert the rules of the usual gothic romance. It’s very much... the first half is a love story, then that love story turns darker. And it’s at the same time a ghost story. I’m working at this moment with Lucinda Clarkson who is a really great playwright from the UK. She has the proper degree of perversity and intelligence to turn it into something interesting to watch. It’s sort of a very compelling version of the classic gothic romance, where you have the spookiness and the windswept landscape that dooms the characters, you know?"

Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman. The film is set to hit theaters July 12th.

He's already writing a sequel? Don't count your chickens before they hatch. Remember Green Lantern?

HELLBOY had more supernatural elements from the comics, like undead Nazis, etc. HELLBOY 2 had the more magical elements, like the giant tree monster, the golden army, etc. If HELLBOY 3 happens, really hoping it combines both of those elements into one awesome end of a trilogy!

I have not like any of his movies. I'm surprised he's writing a sequel to Pacific Rim already. I don't see that movie bringing in a big audiences. Although I won't see it, it will be fun to see the numbers.

Why is this guy already talking about sequel? He needs to get his fat hairy ass up and do the films he promised a year(s) ago.

@Shamo, you do realize Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 3, G.I. Joe Retaliation, Man of Steel, The Wolverine, World War Z, and Fast and the Furious 6 all come out this year right?

Herman Von Klempt would be great bad guy for third Hellboy. I really want to see the return of Karl Kroenen too. That character is so awesome. Pisses me off that he died so quick in the confrontation with Hellboy. I thought they would really get it going considering that Kroenen had his cool Ninja moves with the swords.

@ Marauder, yeah i realize that.

GDT (Pan's Labrynth, Hellboy 1 + 2) > Snyder (300, Watchmen, Dawn of Dead) + Goyer (BB, Blade, Blade 2)

GDT > Alan Taylor's Thor (GoT) + Markus & McFeely (C:TFA, Narnia)

GDT > Chu's GI. Joe (lol @ his movies) + Rheese & Wernick (Zombieland)

GDT < Mangold's Wolverine (Walk The Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Girl Interrupted) + McQuarrie (Unnusual Suspects, Jack Reacher, Valkyrie) .... ok, The Wolverine should be better on paper but Pacific Rim had an epic trailer, so i'd have to see Wolverine's trailer 1st.

GDT > Forster's World War Z (Quantum of Solace, Machine Gun Preacher, Monster's Ball) + Carnahan (State of Play, The Kingdom) ...didn't realise who the screenwriter was. loved SoP and Kingdom so this one should be really good but i'll still take Pacific Rim.

GDT > Lin's F&F 6 (Fast 5, Fast & Furious, Tokyo Drift) + Morgan (Fast Five, F&F, Tokyo Drift)

GDT > Black's IM3 (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon, Long Kiss Goodnight)

should be a great year for action movies but Pacific Rim is the safest bet.
