When you get a chance to talk with Roland Emmerich ("The Day After Tomorrow") it's expected that questions will veer toward the much-anticipated sequel to the 1996 blockbuster,
Independence Day.
He let slip that there are "two versions" of the script that have been written. Wait, there's a version of the script with Smith's character and a version without? "Yes," Emmerich confirmed. When we remarked that this plan was pretty nutty, Emmerich just laughed. He also said that the script work by "White House Down" scribe Jamie Vanderbilt had been completed (on both versions, presumably). Somewhat optimistically, the director remarked that, "It's looking good [for the version with Smith]." - The Playlist
Will he or won't he? We already know that Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum's characters from the original will have a spot in the sequel, but will we see Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) again? Past rumors suggest that Hiller's stepson will play a big part in the sequel, and
The Wrap's recent exclusive indicates that role could be played by Michael B. Jordan. Although, that's just speculation. Nobody seems to cares about Hiller's stripper wife (Vivica A. Fox). As of now
Independence Day 2 is set to be released on July 1st, 2015. Past comments from Emmerich seem to indicate that 20th Century Fox set that date prematurely, just as a way of marking their territory.
