Colin Trevorrow made quite the announcement in late September when he revealed that the original
Jurassic Park trio of Sam Neill (Alan Grant), Laura Dern (Ellie Sattler) and Jeff Goldblum (Ian Malcolm) would return to the franchise they helped build in the highly anticipated
Jurassic World 3.
Speaking with
Empire recently, Trevorrow elaborated on why he and co-writer Emily Carmichael felt this sequel was the pefect time to reintroduce these three beloved characters. He begins by reiterating why they weren't in the prior two installments.
“
We’d have had to come up with a reason why Ellie, Malcolm and Grant all went to the theme park on the exact same day it broke down – again,” and then adds, “
The next film allows the legacy characters to be a part of the story in an organic way. Emily Carmichael and I call it ‘Jurassic Park VI’, because it is.”
As for where we'll find the fan-favorites when the new film picks up nearly two decades after the events of
Jurassic Park III, Trevorrow teases a little of what to expect. “
You start asking the most basic questions: who are these people now? What do they make of the new world they’re living in, and how do they feel about being part of its history? Ultimately it will be in collaboration with the actors. They know and love these characters. We’ll do it together.”
In addition to Neill, Dern and Goldblum, the new film will also feature
Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt as Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing and recently added Mamoudou Athie (
Sorry for Your Loss) and DeWanda Wise (
She's Gotta Have It) in key roles.
Filming is expected to begin in London next February.
Jurassic World 3 opens in theaters on June 11, 2021.
