It took every last second of summer, but as the calendar turns the page to fall, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment's Jurassic World: Dominion has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
The film, which united the newer World cast with the Legacy Park cast, has earned over $376 million domestically and $624 million internationally (including over $158M from China and $45M from Japan), taking it just over $1 billion. It's the third film in the storied franchise to roar past the figure, joining its immediate predecessors 2015's Jurassic World ($1.672B) and 2018's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($1.310B).
Making the feat even more impressive is that the Jurassic World Dominion - Extended Edition has been available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and Digital HD since mid-August and is also currently available to stream on Peacock.
The Colin Trevorrow-directed blockbuster is now the third film to reach the monumental milestone in the pandemic era, following Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.916B) and Paramount's Top Gun: Maverick ($1.464B). It's also now the 50th highest-grossing film ever worldwide and sits at #49 domestically.
While the future remains to-be-determined, Universal is unlikely to keep arguably their biggest franchise dormant for too long, although we do imagine there will be a significant wait before anything new begins to materialize, as this latest installment was billed as the end of the Jurassic Park saga.
Stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and BD Wong were quick to celebrate the news, as they cap off their trilogy with a big bang.
In our review of Colin Trevorrow's franchise capper, we said "Jurassic World: Dominion is pure dinosaur mayhem at its finest, 100% fueled by nostalgia and amplified by epic dinosaur action, making it one of the more fun films of the summer. Due to a so-so story, enjoyment will likely heavily depend on your investment in the series, but if you’re looking for two hours of chaotic entertainment, then this is definitely the film for you."
The star-studded cast of the Jurassic World: Dominion features Jurassic alums Chris Pratt (Owen Grady), Bryce Dallas Howard (Claire Dearing), 3x Golden Globe-nominee Sam Neill (Alan Grant), Academy Award-winner Laura Dern (Ellie Sattler), Academy Award-nominee Jeff Goldblum (Ian Malcolm), BD Wong (Dr. Henry Wu), Omar Sy (Barry Sembane), Justice Smith (Franklin Webb), Daniella Pineda (Zia Rodriguez), and Isabella Sermon (Maisie Lockwood).
Newcomers to the franchise include DeWanda Wise (She's Gotta Have It) as Kayla Watts, Mamoudou Athie (Sorry for Your Loss) as Ramsay Cole, Campbell Scott (The Amazing Spider-Man) as Dr. Lewis Dodgson, Scott Haze (Venom) as Rainn Delacourt, Dichen Lachman (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Soyona Santos, Kristoffer Polaha (Wonder Woman 1984) as Wyatt Huntley, Elva Trill (Starstruck) as Charlotte Lockwood, Dimitri Thivalos in an undisclosed role, and Varada Sethu (Now You See Me 2) as Shira.
