JUSTICE LEAGUE Director Zack Snyder Will Also Release R-Rated Extended Cuts Of Both REBEL MOON Movies

Zack Snyder is moving on from the DCEU to Netflix's Rebel Moon franchise, and it's now been revealed that the filmmaker plans to release R-Rated extended cuts of both movies in the not-too-distant future.

#ReleaseTheRebelMoonCut?

Thankfully, that's not a hashtag we'll see dominating social media in the years to come as Netflix appears to be giving Justice League director Zack Snyder a lot of creative freedom when it comes to his Rebel Moon plans.

The filmmaker's epic vision for this sci-fi story will be split across two movies, expanding on an idea he once pitched to Lucasfilm for a Star Wars movie (the studio is thought to have got cold feet after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released to negative reviews). Now, it's been confirmed that both instalments will receive R-Rated extended cuts!

Talking to Slash Film (via SFFGazette.com), re-recording mixer Andy Koyama talked about working on Rebel Moon and dropped this bombshell.

"We just did the first temp mix for the preview of part one, and it's very exciting. It's a big, huge, space - they probably don't want me to say this - 'Star Wars'-y, 'rebels against the evil empire' thing over all sorts of different worlds," he teased. "It's really fun. There's going to be two films. I think we're mixing that from June to February."

"And there's also going to be extended R-rated versions of each of the two films," Koyama added, "so we're going to be mixing four different features."

After the success of Army of the Dead, Netflix is going all in on Snyder and will likely release these alternate versions of Rebel Moon shortly after the regular ones are released. After all, that's a smart way to get subscribers to watch the same movie twice and should only serve to increase the excitement and intrigue surrounding this franchise.

In the movie, when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, they dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past named Kora to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand.

Rebel Moon is set to be released on Netflix on December 22, 2023.

Rebel Moon: We must form a rebel alliance to stop the empire from taking over all of our worlds.

Only R-rated please.

@DocSpock -
It's a Netflix thing, isn't it?

Of course he will

@GhostDog - you say that like it's bad? I love directors cuts and extended cuts.

@TheVandalore - As long as extended cuts actually add something of substance. In Snyder's case, its just an easy way to get his fans to double dip and spend more money on the same film that's just longer with more plot holes, more slow-mo and some extra CGI blood.

@VileBlood - the few Zack Snyder films I own are extended cuts, Watchmen and the BvS extended, and I know for a fact what you are saying is incorrect. Like, factually, you are wrong. And you exaggerate. Stop being so dramatic. It's okay that you don't like his stuff, you don't have to lie.

Didn't even know he was making 2 of these to begin with... now there are 4, good lord

ZS to Netflix:

@MotherGooseUPus - me neither. But if it originally meant it was gonna be another bloated 4 hour movie, I prefer it to be split in two
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 3/27/2023, 10:03 AM
@bkmeijer1 - agreed... yet, i didn't mind the 4hr ZS JL movie... but on my blue ray it's cut in half and on 2 discs which makes it easier to watch
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/27/2023, 11:08 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - it helped that it was divided in chapters too, so I just watched in multiple sittings as well.

Still, a 4 hour movie is just too long. 3 hours is doable though, but it really depending on the movie though. An epic is good, but something like ZSJL, Endgame or The Batman just feel bloated.

Netflix sure puts a lot of faith in Snyder if they're doing two movies right of the bat, which I think is quite a risky choice.

Netflix could really use a win on the movie front. Especially on movies with franchise potential. Snyder can offer that, but his movies are just too niche, especially if rated R.

If he has control over the movie, just make the one movie you think is the best version. I dont get this obsession with extended cuts or R rated versions when there’s nobody stopping you in the first place.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/27/2023, 8:49 AM
@philinterrupted - yeah. If he wants to make a longer movie that is rated R, just go do that. I'm sure Netflix would allow it
Taonrey

@philinterrupted - definitely since this isn't being released on theaters, a directors cut makes no sense in this situation
philinterrupted
philinterrupted - 3/27/2023, 8:52 AM
@bkmeijer1 - it’s like the typical scheme of double dipping but this is on Netflix so it’s [frick]ing stupid.

@Taonrey - Zack Snyder’s gotta Zack Snyder

Toecutter - 3/28/2023, 5:48 AM
@philinterrupted - I was about to comment the same thing. What the [frick] is the point of making an extended cut when you have complete creative control, no studio interference, and a theatrical release does not limit you??? It's a stupid concept.

Science Fiction doesn't get enough love in cinema.

I hope this does very well, because we deserve quality Space content in abundance!

Isn't this a streaming movie? Just release the directors cut as the regular movie

So wait, Rebel Moon’s going to be PG-13 (to be followed by R-rated extended cuts later)? I was under the impression that Snyder, by going to Netflix, was given carte blanche to make whatever movie he wanted. R-rated with boobs, gore and f-bombs. Netflix was cool with it.

Or is this just Snyder’s M.O. now? Make a watered-down theatrical cut, and then release his “true vision” a year later to make extra cash?

I like some of Snyder's movies but the thought of him pitching this to Lucas film just after everyone critically ripped BvS to shreds is quite hilarious.

Like I would have kept my head down and focused on righting that wrong before pitching a film to another beloved franchise 🤣

Just make a good sci-fi movie. Zack seems like a cool guy with good visual ideas. The hardest part is the script.

I hope this movie succeeds so he can move on from the DCEU and create his own thing.

Considering at this point there are more Star Wars films that have been scrapped than ones that have came out, I really hope this does well. Well enough that Netflix can just declare ‘Lucasfilm have up on you after 2 years? Change the character names and we’ll make it!’

I hope it’s good but none of his non-adaptation based movies have been good. Suckerpunch and Army of the Dead were bad.

Cool! I hope hope these are wild films. Wasn't too thrilled with the end result of the zombie heist picture he made, but it was interesting. I didn't hate anything about it.

I love space/Sci fi high concept stuff so I'm really looking forward to this. I bet the trailers will be wild.

I like extended cuts and alternate cuts. Tons of movies do it, and I really enjoy the differences from a editing and film making discussion. I've always enjoyed studying the fundamentals of editing and story telling. Just fun extra content if you like that stuff, and I really do.

I have like 7 different versions of the Watchmen comic book with different behind the scenes stuff will Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. I like the creativity side. So when movies do it, I soak that stuff up like a sponge.

I hope these films are fun.

It’s a streaming release… why not just have that be the main cut? It’s not like you have to worry about run time or theater turnover so why make two cuts?
DocSpock
DocSpock - 3/27/2023, 11:34 AM

Yeah, one of the streaming services. Not a big enough property that it will burn everyone's a$$ when he ruins it.

As long as you dedicate the needed time and resources to make the definitive version of the film the best it can be, you can go ahead and do 50 other variations of it as far as I'm concerned.
