Godzilla Minus Zero Becomes The Kaiju's First Movie To Receive An R-rating

This November's Godzilla Minus Zero has just made history, becoming the iconic Kaiju's first movie ever to receive an R-rating in U.S. theaters. You can learn more about why that is here.

As anticipation continues to build for Godzilla Minus Zero, it's been confirmed (via SFFGazette.com) that the Kaiju's long-running franchise is set to make history with its first-ever R-rating.

As for what it's done to earn that, the Motion Picture Association has rated the Godzilla Minus One follow-up R for "some violent content/bloody images." Over the past seven decades, Godzilla has laid waste to countless cities, monsters, and innocent humans. However, it seems there's something particularly brutal about filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki's latest entry.

Godzilla Minus Zero's predecessor was rated PG-13 by the MPA, despite being an admittedly very dark movie. We know that this follow-up will pit Godzilla against King Ghidorah, which likely means the human casualties will be higher than they have been in quite some time.

For Godzilla fans looking for a less bloody alternative, next year sees the release of Legendary's Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which we know will be a PG-13 MonsterVerse movie. That's been the case for all previous chapters in that not quite as critically acclaimed franchise.

"War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus," reads Godzilla Minus Zero's synopsis. "Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here."

Shot entirely in Japan as the first-ever Japanese production filmed for IMAX, Godzilla Minus Zero was shot with high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, and optimised in sound and imagery unique to IMAX screens. The globally beloved monster returns to movie theater screens, reaching greater and more terrifying heights, making Godzilla Minus Zero a true cinematic event not to be missed.

Godzilla Minus One was widely hailed as one of the best movies featuring its titular monster. With overwhelmingly positive reviews (it has 99% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an impressive $116 million at the worldwide box office on a reported $10 million to $15 million budget, Toho wasted no time when it came to greenlighting a sequel.

At the 2023 Academy Awards, Godzilla Minus One became the first-ever non-English-language movie to win an Oscar for "Best Visual Effects." In doing so, it bested big-budget Hollywood blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Creator, and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.

Godzilla Minus Zero arrives in theaters on November 6, three days after its Japanese debut.

Seeing minus one in 4dx was one of the most fun times I've had in the movies. Like a universal studios ride

@Vigor - i saw minus one at a regular screen and loved it... this time i need to find a dolby theater or something immersive to truly enjoy it and experience greatness.

the last True amazing experience i had was The Odyssey in dolby and before that was Top Gun Maverick in Dolby

@MotherGooseUPus - it's worth it that you do. Remember the first time godzilla charged up and unleash his atomic breath?
In my Dolby equipped 4dx theater, it sounded (and felt) like I was in Hiroshima when the bomb fell. It was truly awesome

@Vigor - i vividly remember that scene.... i can only imagine how Awesome it was. Im sure it was similar to the cave scene in The Odyssey or the beginning of Maverick...

Bring it on! Just wish there was more than 2 screenings in the UK for this... No way I'm making either because of work.

@Vigor - yeah, we get screwed over for this sort of stuff all the time. Both are in London (2.5-3 hours by train). Minus One didn't get a "full" release til the dubbed version, and that was only for a weekend.

Only seen 2 advertised screenings for Transformers 40th anniversary near me. But then again, I live in the arse end of nowhere 😂

@ArthurFuchsache - sounds about ripe for a competitor to get in there and clean up

@Vigor - weirdly we have 2/3 of the big chain cinemas nearby, but neither offer much outside of whatever big films come out. They show more Bangladeshi/Bollywood flicks than anything else.

Coyote vs Acme got like 10 screenings across 3 cinemas, over 2-3 weeks here. Abysmal.
