To the dismay of Asian people everywhere!

This just in! From the official press release:

"LEGENDARY PICTURES TO DEVELOP AND PRODUCE MAJOR MOTION PICTURE BASED ON TOHO COMPANY’S ICONIC MONSTER, GODZILLA

Burbank, CA – March 29, 2010 – Legendary Pictures announced today that they will develop and produce a new film based on Toho Company’s famed GODZILLA character. Through the terms of the agreement, Legendary Pictures has acquired the rights to produce a movie inspired by Toho’s Godzilla, a franchise the Japanese company created and has nurtured for over fifty years.

Toho’s GODZILLA franchise boasts one of the most widely recognized film creatures worldwide, resulting in a series of books, television programs, video games and more than 25 films worldwide. Legendary intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic manner possible. The company will, in the near future, announce a filmmaker to helm the film for an intended 2012 release. The film will fall under the company’s co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros. Toho will distribute the film in Japan."

As long as they keep Matthew Broderick away from this one I will be happy to see it. The last Godzilla that was in theaters made me fall asleep. Not nearly enough action.

Hey Legendary, let's see something EPIC this time!!!

Watching some of the old godzilla movies that were much better than the Godzilla in 1998. If they do this I think they should do a remake of Destroy All Monsters simply because of the destruction caused in that movie.

Aside from its appearance a genuine Godzilla I think is a statement against war and the use of atomic / nuclear or any weapons of mass destruction. They should never remove this concept.

As for the appearance they should not deviate much from the appearance. The face of the last American version was actually acceptable -- the uglier the better! Its the body that was all wrong. It should be fat and humanoid. -- not slim and reptillian like. According to one interview, the creators of Godzilla stresses that it is not a reptile (anymore) but a monster. A monster that is a by product of war and nuclear weapons-- similar to the original Hulk.

If they make it dark and really close to a horror movie, then it would work. But knowing Hollywood they would make some zoomed in Micheal Bay crap that you can't figure out who's fighting who.

As the self professed biggest Godzilla fan here, I cant stop smiling.

And how can they screw this up? They already have a blueprint on exactly how to not design Godzilla, who not to cast, and what plot elements will utterly suck in a Godzilla movie! As far as I'm concerned, the entire 1998 tristar movie will serve as a permanent reminder for any future Godzilla moive on what NOT to do. And we have LEGENDARY pictures backing this one, folks.

By george, I think we'll be alright.

Sweet if this movie is done right it will be freakin awesome with cool explosions and monster battle.

Is that movie that made you go to sleep Godzilla Final Wars because if it is that movie was a big disappointment Godzilla was only in like 20 min. of the movie the rest was cheesy acting and crap special effects.

@ epic

yeah, he was in babysitting, too funny.

my point, though, is that people constantly complain about remakes and reboots, and the biggest complaint is that hollywood doesn't have original ideas. well i got news for everyone, coming out with a Cap or Thor movie is NOT an original idea.

the characters are NOT original. its also funny that there are so many people that complain about reboots, but then they're the same people that complain that a CBM isn't exactly like the comics...because y'know, if they were, then it would be REALLY original!

point is, unless a movie studio/writer create a character and story completely from scratch, then it isn't original. bottom line. So people should think about that next time they call something unoriginal.

and people HATE remakes...until its something like Batman Begins, that THEY like. then its magically okay...

I have faith in Legendary. Up 'til now they've given us more good than bad:

• Batman Begins
• Superman Returns
• 300
• The Dark Knight
• Watchmen
• The Hangover

Granted, they also made 10,000 BC, but it was directed by the same guy who screwed up Godzilla last time. And there is no way in hell Legendary are stupid enough to give him this gig. Hopefully.
