From 20th Century Studios, No One Will Save You is an action-packed face-off between Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever) and a host of extraterrestrial beings who threaten her future while forcing her to deal with her past.
To say much more would run the risk of venturing into spoiler territory, but this relentless sci-fi psychological thriller never lets up. No One Will Save You is filmmaker Brian Duffield's sophomore film after he wrote, produced and directed 2020's critically acclaimed Spontaneous, but we're sure many of you will remember that he also penned 2020's Love and Monsters.
Released on Digital by Paramount during the height of the pandemic, the movie was directed by Michael Matthews, with Shawn Levy (Deadpool 3) producing. The impressive cast included Dylan O'Brien, Jessica Henwick, Dan Ewing, Michael Rooker, and Ariana Greenblatt, and it has an impressive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Internationally, Love and Monsters debuted on Netflix and quickly became a Top 10 hit on the streamer. So, could a sequel follow? We asked Duffield that question during a recent chat about No One Will Save You and, honestly, it was hard to get a read on whether he's interested!
"Oh, cool," he responded when we brought up the movie's streaming success. "I would be very excited to work with Dylan O’Brien. I know him and never got a chance to meet Jessica [Gao]. I would be really excited to get to do something with those guys, yeah."
Whether that ends up being Love and Monsters 2 obviously is unclear, though we'd strongly recommend tracking the movie down if you haven't already. Had it not been for COVID, we have a feeling it would have been a surprise hit at the box office.
When we spoke to Matthews in late 2020 about a sequel, he told us, "I have got a few ideas that could be really interesting, but it's not something we've gone too far down the road with. It really just depends on the movie itself and how audiences take it in."
"It was really important to Dylan and myself from the beginning not to be...look, it obviously sets itself up to go on, but the important part was to make a great movie and that's the core. We're not trying to build a universe or a franchise. If that happens because people love the movie, then I think there are a lot of great ideas for where it could go."
"That's the first step. Putting it out there and letting it be its own thing rather than it feeling like a product that there's four in a row waiting to go. That was really important to us."
For the time being, it doesn't sound like there are any concrete plans in place to move forward with any sort of follow-up. Without knowing how well it performed on Digital from a financial standpoint, it's hard to say whether a sequel is feasible, though we'd be shocked if it's not something Netflix might consider down the line.
No One Will Save You begins streaming on Hulu on September 22 Ahead of Huluween Season.
