After years of rumor and speculation, it was officially announced back in August of 2019 that a fourth Matrix movie was in development at Warner Bros. with Lana Wachowski, who co-wrote and co-directed the original trilogy with her sister Lilly, returning to helm, and Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) signing on to reprise their respective roles.
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in several filming delays, but the movie wrapped production in Berlin last July, and is currently scheduled for later this year.
We had been led to believe that the film would be called "The Matrix" (continuing the trend of franchise revivals retaining the title of the original instalment), but it looks like it will have a subtitle after all.
Makeup artist Shunika Terry posted an image of the wrap gift she received to Instagram, and the lanyard in the photo clearly says: "Matrix Resurrections."
The Matrix: Resurrections would certainly be a fitting title, since the movie not only marks the "resurrection" of the franchise, but the return of both Neo and Trinity, who were killed off at the end of Revolutions.
The fourth Matrix movie will also star Jada Pinkett Smith, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick and Jonathan Groff, and is set to hit theaters and HBO Max on December 22, 2021.
