Matt Smith Officially Quits DOCTOR WHO

After months of speculation, BBC is confirming that Matt Smith, currently playing the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who, will be leaving the show soon. Hit the jump to know when!

A press conference was held earlier today for a huge announcement concerning Doctor Who, and now it's confirmed: Matt Smith will be soon leaving the show. The actor will be back for only two more episodes: the upcoming 50th Anniversary Special in November and the 2013 Christmas Special (where his regeneration will happen). The following quotes are from several sites, including BBC and The Telegraph. A senior BBC insider said last night to the press: "The hunt for the new Doctor starts now and it is wide open. The role has not been offered to anyone and the producers have not settled on a suitable candidate."

Matt Smith, who's being The Doctor since 2010, said it had been "an honour" to play the character but added: "When you gotta go, you’ve gotta go. Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans. It’s been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he’s a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor. The fans are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show – and speculate more about the future of the show – in a way that I have never seen before, [their] dedication is truly remarkable. I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special. It’s been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with ‘the ginger, the nose and the impossible one’. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys."

Steven Moffat, current showrunner of the show (who apparently will stay), said: ‘Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he’d turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show,he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him – sometimes literally – his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor. But great actors always know when it’s time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt – bow ties were never cooler. Of course, this isn’t the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now – all unknowing, just going about their business – is someone who’s about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again. After 50 years, that’s still so exciting."

Now, the search for the next Doctor begins, as series 8 (season) will have an all new incarnation of this classic character, also, it could be his last, as it has previously been stated on the show that Time Lords can regenerate only 12 times (and so have 13 incarnations). Clara Oswald, the current companion played by actress Jenna Louise Coleman, will stay as companion, while John Hurt will apparently be doing more appearances too. How do you feel with the news? Are you sad with Smith's departure or were you looking forward to it? Share your opinion below!

@Ocelot, are you serious? and @ThisIsHeavy, they won't do that, he's already Sherlock and he's big in America now, won't happen

I think that there's a good chance that they'll go with an American or Canadian actor, seeing that the show now has a big American following.

Actually the regeneration limit has been turned over so plenty of Dr. Who to come! http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2010/oct/12/doctor-who-immortal-reveals-bbc

Hm, I believe that after he cured River in angels take manhattan, and idk gave his memories to that "sun" in that episode with the singing girl, probably it came back to what it is. Sarah Jane Smith as cannon is not safe to believe, well.

We're going to season 8 already, it will get really boring and stories will start to get repetitive, I think it should end with the next one in season 11 or 12.

That sucks. Just 2 weeks ago he said he would start filming series 8 later this year or early next. Now, I know they want to keep things close to the vest and not reveal the fact that he's leaving too early, but don't lie to us. Don't let us believe you're here for the next series and then say you're not just 2 weeks later.

Big bummer, he was a great Doctor. Tennant was the best, Smith filled in quite nicely. But I guess it's the nature of the beast. Sad to see it happen, but it was inevitable.

This sucks! Matt's Doctor was just getting fleshed out more and then they have to go replace him. Well best of luck to him, he will be hard to replace. I hope he gets lots of roles as he is super talented and so is David Tennant, whom I don't understand why he hasn't been in much since he left. Here's hoping the next doctor is just as good as the last 3. They must be from the UK of course and also super talented ideally someone like Benedict Cumberbach or Tom Hiddleston!

@ Thisisheavy - Far too obvious. In fact he turned it down 4 years ago when Moffat took over.

Iwan Rheon would be interesting. Young, and has a menace look. I would like the doctor to be less childish, and darker, more serious.

it's definately not gonna be a very known actor as people that well known arent gonna want to sign a contract that limits their jobs for ther next 3 years.

I doubt it'll be a woman since Jenna Louise Coleman is apparently staying on and I imagine if they had a female doctor then they'd get a male companion (gotta have some family friendly sexual tension).

In all likeliness it'll be a British actor, late 20s, recognisable but not famous.

I think there's a strong chance that they might cast a Black actor in the role, and tbh I think that would be extremely good.

I'd say Chiwetel Ejiofor, but he may be hesitant to sign a long contract.

I guess we'll see...

But I would love to see James McAvoy as the next Doctor.

Sad to see Matt go, really liked him as the Doctor. As for the 12th, I have a few people I'd be interested in. Reece Shearsmith is older and his hilarious, Richard Ayoade would be interesting, Russel Tovey as well.
