Nerds Gone Spiritual?

Nerds Gone Spiritual?

Are nerds becoming "real" Jedi?

Okay, this isn't exactly CBM news per se, but this is definitely related. I was checking up on AOL news, and I came across a link to an article about weird religions. What I found was a page about how some folks are looking to start defining Heavy Metal as a religion. That was laughable.

What I found below that was a blurb about the Jedi Church. Much to my surprise, they are very real. They are defined as such:
"The Jedi interpret and use the philosophic teachings found in "Star Wars" and other inspirational sources. Jediism is a blend of Taoism and Buddhism. It also shares basic ideals with many other religions and the Code of Chivalry. In spite of holding different views and having different interpretations of the abundant "Star Wars" material, the Jedi share a set of core values essential to their path, namely, the Force and a code of conduct similar to the chivalry code, more commonly known as "The Jedi Code." However, there is no set path and no "holy book." (credit to AOL and asylum.com for the quote).

They are also known as the Temple of the Jedi Order. For the website, http://www.jedi-church.co.uk/

Just for the record, I do not support this perversion. Its funny, but way too overboard. Don't get me wrong, I L-O-V-E Star Wars, but i'm not joining this religion in our non-force-using world. Sorry.

There's way to many different types of Heavy Metal to form a religion, you know too many subgenres like thrash and groove etc

but the Jedi thing is pretty funny, it is to my understanding that Jedis don't have "relations' with the opposite sex. I think it's pretty funny that a bunch of mega nerds built a church around that belief system. And yes, offence was intended :P

Wasn't jediism added to the british census a few years ago due to it getting enough write ins? I think I remember reading that somewhere.

Well gee scientology formed from Hubbard's power of the mind book so why not a Jedi knight form of religion in the end there all geekiods.
And now Klingon lingo is now a recognised world languge (S.P.) because enough people speak it.

Wow. I just like comic books and CBMs. Why is that we have to be grouped up with these clowns in the media??? I tell people that I like comics or CBMs and suddenly they think I just walked out from a Star Trek convention speaking Klingon. I'd really like to see some stereotypes broken from these fringe sorts.

I honestly done think its going "overboard". What you are finding difficult is that it is based on the ideas of a movie and that its so far away from your reality. The truth is there is spiritual truth in everything. So if people who are "nerds", which tend to be rather disconnected from reality, find such truth in star wars then it makes perfect sense. Nothing wrong with it. What is wrong is when people who wake up a little hold on to that instead of branching out from there which is the issue with all the ways we learn to stay identified to one way of being. All moments in our life and revelations are in fact stepping stones to higher and more in depth truths and relations with life. So in the end I think you could be right. Nerds are in fact becoming spiritual. But it might serve you to define what a nerd is.

To me everyone is a nerd at something. You could be a sports nerd, car nerd, computer nerd, spiritual nerd, or comic book nerd. The list is endless. The meaning has more to do with love and exploration than it does with something derogatory which it was meant as for such a long time. After taking that in then we are all nerds and obviously we all wake up here and there. Those that seek any spiritual relationship with life are waking to what life is in a new way.

The one thing I have to ask is "What makes this a perversion?" Not that I subscribe to this kind of behavior myself or any other faith. How is this any different then say Scientology, The church of Mormons, Catholicism, Mennonite, Theravada, Mahayana, Sufism, Sunni, or the many other off shoots of the many different faiths?

I found out about this a couple years ago. There are some cops in Scotland who have gotten their government to recognize it as a religion.

@Boekelaar Remember, there are some Christians on this site who may be offended by your comments. So, it would be best to keep all flaming to yourself on all religions. Thank you.

LMAO Tea!!!

I for one REALLY don't see ANY problem with this. Unlike scientology which preaches hatred and incourages it's followers to DESTROY in every possible way ANYONE who thinks differently from them (i'm not making this up: www.xenu.net), the Jedi religion preaches the Code of Chivalry. What's wrong with that??? It's like the Arthurian religion. Nothing wrong with it.

@ Fartman: You have never heard of Jediism before this?

Man that's been going on for years now. And if I am not mistaken, they will even put that on US military dog tags now. lol

@ fartman: I am curious though... why did you call it a "perversion" ? It's no worse than polygamy (Islam) or worshiping human sacrifice (the crucifixion)

Boogie138 - 1/29/2010, 7:29 AM
as far as new religions popping up i think its fine, i belive in deism, and part of the reason i don't follow organized religion is i belive no one can tell you what is right or wrong when it comes to the spiritual. we are interperative and clicky beings us humans, so while some take familiar roads and others try to blaze their own trail, i am lucky enough to live in a county that allows freedom of faith. so let whoever pratice or do whatever as long as said practices do not involve harming another human being. i refuse to judge or give a flying fart about other peroples faith, i am friends with people i connect to. be it christian, atheist, scientologist, muslim, jew or jedi i can not judge

if being a jedi helps put some one on the right path, and they lead a happier, healthier life then i say to all...

All due respect guys, but I'm a pretty active christian and this site really isn't all about debating faith or religion. In this article if we're gonna talk about one, it should probably be the Jedi one. Not trying to make anyone mad, but it's an important thing to me. :-/

lol @ Bamf

soooo people who see things differently are not allowed to talk about it? That's kind of.... fascist

Bamf7 If you do not like the conversation in here please be an adult and hit the back button. No one is forcing you to read this discussion. There are hundreds of other topics on this site you can read if this "One" bothers you. The topic is about Jediism which some look upon as a true religion. How can you discuss this with out involving other types of faith?
1Rocketeer
1Rocketeer - 1/29/2010, 9:28 AM
well to be fair, even if you don't believe in religions, they still offer some great teachings.
however the world's just clogged up with people who take it way too seriously.
1Rocketeer
1Rocketeer - 1/29/2010, 9:29 AM
btw, when do you think the jedi faith will have its own holy war now that it's a "real" religion?

oh wait, dumb question, probably when some guy starts the sith religion.
StephenStrange

@ Teabag: I love the "Conventional Logic" one. That's actually pretty philosophical. The simplistic black and white dichotomy of the atheistic perspective includes even simple doubter or people that take the "doubt by lack of evidence" position which includes me. So essentially even agnostics are atheists IF you accept the atheistic nomenclature as being universally meaningful. Personally I don't, but in terms of conversation it's just as well to go ahead and use the term Atheist because it's ususally no good gatting into nuances.

StephenStrange - 1/29/2010, 9:36 AM
@ Rocketeer: No. I don'tthink we will ever see any Jedi jihaadists
