Godzilla has grown from being a Japanese movie monster, to a worldwide pop culture icon appearing in numerous media incarnations including Marvel comics. And the creature has starred in twenty-eight films, all produced by Toho Co., Ltd. And now according to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary Pictures have bought out the character's rights for a new adaption, with a new director in line.

"Gareth Edwards, the British filmmaker who wrote and directed indie sci-fi movie Monsters, is closing a deal to develop and direct the creature feature for Legendary Pictures, the company that helped produce blockbusters such as Inception and The Dark Knight."

Edwards' Monster film apparently landed him the Godzilla gig, which was made for a budget in the low six figures and took a different tact in its handling of the alien invasion genre.

With Gareth Edwards bringing Godzilla into the 21 century, what do you think?

I thought Monsters was one of the most overrated films I have ever seen. I Love the old Godzilla flicks, but can't say I'm too excited for a reboot. Look at the last one!

So...why is it that only Wasp and Yellowjacket can stop Godzilla? Do they mean tech wise? Or, special amount of brawn they can dish out at him that no one else can't?...

Now I'm hyped. Question: will it still be the same Godzilla from Japan or a reboot. Eitherway I hope its still maintain the antiwar, anti-weapons of mass destruction, and anti-terrorism message.

@GUNSMITH

FYI, there are only a few Godzilla films where he is a hero. A majority of the films people run in terror of him.

I saw this flick and for a movie called Monsters there sure wasn't a lot of them in it. I thought the movie was kind of boring. Don't get me wrong, the story, acting and effects were good but I thought it would have been cooler. I hope with a bigger budget Gareth Edwards can make a giant monster movie that delivers.

@BrutalDuke I just googled Godzilla 2012. It's the 1st pic on the 4th page of images. IMO it's the best looking Godzilla I've ever seen. If Godzilla get's shot by any missles in this movie, it better just annoy the heck out of him and NOT freakin kill him.
