New Series Preview: Alphas on SyFY Network.

Alphas is a new show that is set to premiere on SyFy. The show features a group of people who have a unique set of mutant-like abilities.

The new series stars Academy Award nominee David Strathairn, and Malik Yoba. Some of the other cast members are relatively new but i could be wrong. With No Ordinary Family already canceled, is there hope for another show about people with super human capabilities?

Official Synopsis

Alphas follows a team of ordinary citizens whose brain anomalies imbue them with extraordinary mental and physical abilities. Taking the law into their own hands, the unlikely team, shepherded by Dr. Leigh Rosen (Emmy Award-winner and Oscar nominee David Strathairn) investigates cases that suggest other Alpha activity to uncover what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon have not been able, or willing, to solve. These gifted individuals must balance their quirky personalities and disparate backgrounds with their not always visible powers as they work to solve crimes, stop the ticking time bomb and catch the enemy.

Written by Zak Penn who wrote the screenplay for X-2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, the show was originally pitched to NBC studios but they passed on it. ABC decided to pick up the series with a 6 episodes order. After the WGA Strike, ABC decided to pass on it. Seems like this show has had a series of bad luck but hopefully it has finally found a home at SyFy. Whether it stays there for long is left to the viewers. The show is set to premier on July 10. In addition to Academy Award nominee David Strathairn (Temple Grandin, Good Night, and Good Luck), the ensemble cast stars Malik Yoba (New York Undercover, Why Did I Get Married?), Warren Christie (October Road), Laura Mennell (Watchmen), Ryan Cartwright (Mad Men, Bones) and Azita Ghanizada (Castle).

Cool stuff and don't worry about any haters, this looks a cross between HEROES, 4400 and maybe WANTED?

I will give it 1 season. Sorry to say that, but no faith in it since they cancelled StarGate Universe!

Let's see... Totally plausible mutations with believable explanations and it's a cop show who's protagonists happen to have superhuman abilities. Winner. For the same reason BSG was a winner. Character driven writing with multi episode arcs and a scifi piece added to a proven formula. Looks like Syfy seems to be the only channel that gets it, even if they are responsible for shit like "Tyroctopus Rex vs. Megasharktuna".

I just read an interview with the creators of this show on the SFX website and they reckon it's closer in tone to House than Heroes, so it might just get beyond six episodes.

Check it out: http://www.sfx.co.uk/2011/05/27/alphas-is-more-like-house-than-heroes-says-creator/

The formula is not new:

....Mutant X is one of many that uses the same formula.

I'd give this show a try though as long it it doesn't became hokey/campy - or worse; become a Heroes clone with too many plot twists that it becomes a joke of itself.

It's SyFy....no matter how crappy it is, 3-4 seasons. SGU got pulled after 2 because of the budget. This looks to be lacking in the sfx department. I'll DVR it and hopefully will be Bette than No Ordinary Family.

Agree wit Ranger14, it feels like Leverage. As long as it has a little more diversity than Mutant X i'm down for it.

I notice a lot of negative comments associated with Heroes in this thread. Truth be told the first two seasons of that show are some of the best TV out there... can't really speak for what came after but seriously folks; are we the geek almighty that hard to please? I remember I was giddy in the 90s bc/ we finally got an X-Men cartoon. Anyway, there's two cents; do what you will with it.

This looks pretty interesting actually. When I read this was about another "mutant abilities group" show I almost didn't click it. But a cop show with special powers and David Strathairn doesn't sound too bad. Will check it out! Hopefully the writing is good...

Heroes was mostly good but what bugged me was it would build and build then the climax was blah. Like the carnival climax for example Hiro teleports everyone away and the big fight was just the two dooshes pushing dirt back and forth. It was like watching a damn fight between a coach and an umpire on a baseball field. That and they started up some characters than forgot about them. If the worked on a big finish and didnt abandon characters it would probably still be going.

David Strathairn is a class act I just
hope this show is too, it can't be any
worse than the insanely inaccurate FIRST
ASS!

I'll give it a look see!

Nice article SELINA KYLE@!

I love the simple powers they have, it makes it look and feel more realistic. A factor to Heroes failing was that it needed a huge amount of viewers to pay for its high budget due to special effects. Whereas this doesn't have that problem as much (:

really excited!

Looks pretty cool. I need some new shows to watch because almost all the shows I watched are all gone. All I have left is Supernatural, and Vampire Diaries left. This show looks pretty good and so does Terra Nova and Falling Skies.

Great the pessemists have surfaced as they always do:

1: They have to compare it to one or two things that comes to mind and either call it a rip-off or say its a lesser version of it.

2: Rather than support their own favoured genre, they naturally go in with knives out ready to kill it at birth.

3: Based on the first episode, they will give it zero chance to find its feet and instead state that it has no chance of becoming a decent show.

4: When it gets cancelled becasue they, the very target audience who should have supported it refused to watch it on broadcast and contribute to its much needed figures. They will state they always knew it was going to get cancelled.

Fanboys are like a bunch of crabs in a bucket, whenever one tries to get out the others pinch that crab and pull him back in. You keep your own genre down by your own pompus lack of support for its limited TV endeavours, give a show a chance for change and just watch it for 6 or 7 episodes and evaluate its potential based on a sum of its production merits. Soon all you have to bitch about will be reality TV shows at this rate!

@Spock- That is understandable. I really do not believe this show will be worth it.

I'm a little late to check out an article and Ranger steals my comment again. I couldn't agree more. This looks like X-Men meets Leverage. I will be checking it out for sure.

Good stuff MK!
