Though many initially saw
Overlord as a
Cloverfield follow up, Bad Robot has since denied the rumor, stating that it would be a standalone twisted historical horror film in its busy slate. For a production company that relies on franchises (
Star Wars,
Star Trek,
Cloverfield), its very intriguing to see Abrams backing the one-off, something he gave high praise to when speaking to Digital Spy earlier this year:
First of all it's something that I can't wait for you to see cause the director, Julius Avery, has done an amazing job on it. But the specifics, you know, we should wait and see. But that's really a crazy movie.
With a Fantastic Fest premiere a whopping two months before its United States release date, it is no doubt that Paramount has confidence in the film. With Nazis, Abrams, and World War II gore, will it be the sleeper hit of the fall?
