POLL: What Did You Think Of PACIFIC RIM?

POLL: What Did You Think Of PACIFIC RIM?

Guillermo del Toro's action packed monster mash scored big with most critics, but has struggled slightly at the Box Office thus far. You already know what I think (and if you don't, find out here) but what did you guys make of it?

Although it held its own for a while, Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim -- as was predicted -- eventually succumbed to the popularity of a couple of sequels (Despicable Me 2 and Grown Ups 2) to earn a third place spot at the North American box office. Of course good/bad BO isn't always an indication of quality as there are many factors involved, and the movie has seemed to go over very well with not only critics but fans. Now had quite a few problems with it myself, but I actually thought most audiences would lap it up..let's hope it does slightly better overseas. Anyway, what did you CBMers think? Vote below and then sound off in the usual place.

Really fun movie even if Charlie Hunnam does seem to be from the Kid Rock School of Acting.

@mctrinket - Your comment made me lol. "Kid Rock School of Acting". I'm gonna use that one, but I'm not going to give you credit, haha

But seriously, Charlie Hunnam did a decent job I thought. I wouldn't say he's bad, maybe he's just different. I think the script brought him down a couple notches, the dialogue was very Anime/Manga. Which is ironic, because the movie was inspired by just that.

Ashamed this had potential and i was expecting more from Guillermo del Toro. This is perhaps his weakest movie in regards to plots/character development. The acting bug me as well. I hated it that all the major fight scenes were at night and raining... I'm assuming they did this to hid the CGI. I would had love a major fight scene in the day so you can actually see the damn fights... I also hated the ending and wish it was a better fight sequence.

It seems this movie will be love by Fan Boy but hate by GA. Hopefully this doesn't stop Hollywood from to making Gundam Wing. That's what I really hope gets made...

Best movie of the summer (so far) for me. Even though I didn't like 2 things: screen play/dialogue could be better and all the other Jagers sucked except for Gypsy.

Overal the movie was great. The action definitely made up for the acting skills of Charlie Hunnam and some of the lesser known actors. Idris Elba, Charlie Day, and Ron Pearlman were the saving grace to any scenes that didn't have Giant Robots slapping around Giant Monsters.

I only have 3 minor complaints:
1. Idris Elbas acting skills seemed wasted on this movie compared to the actors he shared scenes with.
2. Every scene with Charlie Hunnam felt cliche and like it was out of every high school movie you had ever seen. The cafeteria scene was like watching 10 Things I Hate About you.
3. Some parts of the movie were very predictable which is a little disappointing when 10 minutes before something happens you can see it coming a mile away like a Kaiju.

But like I said Minor in comparison to the sheer enjoyment you get from watching the Jager vs Kaiju scenes. It's like Voltron or Trazor Z vs Godzilla. In fact it's what you wish every Godzilla could have looked like. And the City Destruction puts Man of Steel to shame.
For me I give it 4.25 out of 5 and I would go see it again.

@kalehawj Agreed. Day time fight scenes would have been awesome. Guillermo hyped it up a bit too much and didn't quite deliver it.

Haven't seen it yet, going tomorrow, but from every trailer I have seen, I've though this is what Transformers SHOULD have been with the way the Robots are done & the battles look.

It looks really appealing from every trailer too & looks to cater to a few demographics depending on what you're into, so I was surprised people in the states seem to have chose to go see Despicable Me 2 & Grown Ups 2 more still over THIS!

:/

Wish the ending with the two last Jaegers Gipsy and Striker actually had some cool team up epic fighting sequence before they get beaten by the category 5 kaiju. Instead we get this so so ending IMO... MOS is still the best movie this year.

Here's my ranking this year.
1. MOS
2. STID
3. PR
4. Ironman 3

I'm stuck between "good," and "very good"...I mean, it's all kinds of predictable, clichéd, and Charlie Hunnam is just a bland lead (that one I can't tolerate), but on the other hand, my expectation is well met: It's a blast, and it takes itself as one massive cartoon, that embraces all its typicality, archetypal characters, et cetera. Although, with a third act that feels like a tired rehash - because the action sequences in the first two acts have taken everything up to eleven - I might just settle with "good," though that doesn't mean that I don't love it!

I thought Pacific Rim was the best movie of the year so far. I thought Charlie Hunnam was great. Ron Perlman was great. The rest of the cast was great. The robots were cool so were the monsters. I hope there is going to be a sequal to this. The action was awesome.

It was cool that 2 actors of Sons Of Anarchy was in this. I hope they come back for the sequal.

Iron Man 3 = Decent, Man of Steel = Disappointingly Bad,

PACIFIC RIM = EXCELLENT

I'll agree with DoubleD on this on, the last time I walked out of a movie with a smile as big as I had was the Avengers. It was a great movie, and it really brought out the kid in me. And, personally, I heard so much negative about the acting and dialogue before I saw the movie that I was pleasantly surprised at how decent it was. Best movie this summer.

People on this site always seem to be on one of two sides when it comes to a movie: Love it, or hate it. I didn't think it was a bad movie but it most definitely not a great. I couldn't stop counting the cliches. Totally forgetable IMO.

I'm with @Benjamitesandwich and @DoubleD

I got exhilaration watching Iron Man 3 earlier this year, Man of Steel I was generally bored but was able to enjoy action scenes at least (to a point), Star Trek Into Darkness was thoroughly enjoyable.

With Pacific Rim, I got the geek slapped out of me again! It's the Power Rangers/Voltron movie I've been waiting for! Almost the same feeling I got watching the Avengers. I say almost, because obviously the acting was kinda off (aside from the excellent Idris Elba). But as an anime watcher, I could see the mecha anime influences in the style. The action of the robots fighting the aliens was so awesome I think I squealed!

The detail in the robots, and the piloting of them was excellent. Even the destruction was detailed! The aliens themselves were brilliant which I wasn't expecting. Was great seeing so much tech which is what I loved from the Iron Man movies. When I watch a movie, I want to be thoroughly entertained and for the movie to bring out the kid in me. Avengers, the Iron Man trilogy, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Pacific Rim did that for me.

Went in for the action. This is a concept film. Person A comes up with a concept person B writes a story to fulfill the concept.

I thought it was very good movie in the genre, it took me my to my childhood when going to the theater on Saturday afternoon to catch the latest Gozilla , King Kong or Mothra movie and in that vein it accomplishes that in spades.

Much to my surprise, this movie was lacking in many areas.

It was still a good entertaining flick, but perhaps I went in with my expectations too high, despite Ror's previous review.

Some of problems with the movie:
Story- It was so [frick]ing annoying how many times they jerked around with Mako assuming her role as Jaeger pilot when we all new it was going to happen. They spent like the entire 2nd act on this issue alone.

Charlie Hunnam's character was annoying as [frick]. Maybe not the character but his dry portrayal of him. This guy is no leading man anywhere except on the small screen. Sorry SoA fans.

The two "Dr's" where annoying as [frick], with the guy with the nasally voice pulling slightly ahead of the other doctor in the annoying character portrayal race.

The scale was epic. I loved the boat scene in the trailer when Gipsy smacked the Kaiju with the shipping ship, but the more I think about it, the scale of that ship was just.... off. It should have been much bigger comparitively or they should have used a smaller ship.

AND finally the ending, Beckett abandoned ship in the escape pod and magically floated through the air and into the "Throat" portal, and safely to the surface from the depths of the Pacific, nevermind the fact he would die in the ascent unless it were done slowly over a period of hours.

I have the ability to suspend logic and common sense and enjoy a movies qualities and overlook it's deficiencies. That said I would give this movie a 3/3.5 with some of that score being made up from my appreciation of them departing from the typical Hollywood fare with an original story.
