PROMETHEUS: What Are The Critics Saying So Far?

The first few reviews for Ridley Scott's highly anticipated return to the science fiction genre are in, so what do critics make of the Alien prequel movie? Find out what The Hollywood Reporter, Screen Daily and Variety had to say here.

The first three reviews for Prometheus are positive, although perhaps not to the extent we were all expecting. While it definitely sounds as if director Ridley Scott has crafted a breathtaking 3D epic, there have been some minor complaints about the story. However, as you can see by clicking on the links below (be careful as each of the full versions contain a fair few spoilers) this doesn't seem to be a major problem for most these critics. More reviews are expected tonight from UK outlets, but sound off with your thoughts on these in the usual place.

Ridley Scott's third venture into science-fiction, after Alien in 1979 and Blade Runner in 1982, won't become a genre benchmark like those classics despite its equivalent seriousness and ambition, but it does supply enough visual spectacle, tense action and sticky, slithery monster attacks to hit the spot with thrill-seeking audiences worldwide. Technically, Prometheus is magnificent. Shot in 3D but without the director taking the process into account in his conceptions or execution, the film absorbs and uses the process seamlessly. A visually stunning return to science-fiction by Ridley Scott caters too much to audience expectations when more imaginative boldness would have taken it further.

It has been three decades since Ridley Scott last dipped his directorial toe in science-fiction territory (with 1982’s Blade Runner), but with his fantasy epic Prometheus it is clear his striking sense of vision, drama and excitement fits perfectly with the genre and he has delivered a film that is already one of the most anticipated titles of the summer and should thrill, challenge and provoke audiences ready for his signature brand of intelligent and visceral film-making.

A mission to uncover the origins of human life yields familiar images of death and devastation in "Prometheus." Elaborately conceived from a visual standpoint, Ridley Scott's first sci-fier in the three decades since "Blade Runner" remains earthbound in narrative terms, forever hinting at the existence of a higher intelligence without evincing much of its own. Fox's midsummer tentpole has generated considerable excitement since it was announced the film would share some story DNA with Scott's 1979 horror landmark, "Alien," and a marketing push promising comparable levels of gore and tension should ensure that "Prometheus" catches B.O. fire.

So...it's a really good that is pretty [frick]ing disappointing? I'm sensing this movie is more style over substance judging by the consensus so far.

Guess I'ma lower my expectations just a bit. Still, can't wait to see it at midnight next Friday in IMAX 3D.

This film is getting positive reviews so far and that is all that matters.

@R888 yeah, I just skimmed through Variety's review. They straight up said the ending was pointless.

I though Ripley said that the last 8 minutes ties in with alien, Im concern about the ending

So it's visually interesting but that's all it is? I would have hoped that Scott would've learned by now how to make deep characters.
antonio

Ridley contradicts himself quite a bit, especially regarding this film. I would assume the last minutes of the film tie in with Alien.

why is the Alien Prequel aspect crossed out in the tagline here? it's an Alien prequel the original crashed ship, space jockey and xenomorph are in this film...whoever thinks this isn't connected to both Alien and Aliens (check out the viral site they have the colony similar to Hadley's Hope, powerloader and version of the pulse-rifle) needs to stop huffing studio spin
antonio
antonio - 5/30/2012, 3:32 AM
@Batfan I see what you mean, but he is the kind of director that puts more into the themes of his films rather than his characters.
CCB1984
CCB1984 - 5/30/2012, 3:36 AM
the project was originally planned as a two-part Alien prequel...and for the last month or so all we've been hearing is that Ridley Scott wants to make another Prometheus film... the first film would focus on the space jockey and second "could" dive into the origins of the xenomorph (if they aren't explored in Prometheus as bio-weapons created by the alien gods)... Ridley and Weaver had imagined to have Alien 5 discover the xenomorph's home world which is a brutal planet..think Pandora but the aliens are less cartoony and more vicious
CCB1984

there had been talk that the xenomorphs on their world were like pests or insects compared to the other inhabitants

Still gonna go see it,and if it is really an alien "prequel" even better! Is there Any Confirmation out there That says it officially is?

@CCB1984 I personally find the sequel bait for this film to be extremely annoying as hell.

Critics get it wrong all the time! Who cares what they think!
CCB1984
CCB1984 - 5/30/2012, 3:47 AM
@antonio maybe that's why they've been trying to avoid the sequel talk until now..so people won't be turned off if the conclusion isn't as satisfying if it was a one-off.. David , Shaw and Vickers could be great candidates to continue this new franchise...they've been promoting the film as the three are real stars of the film..not just one of them like with Ripley..however that could be to throw us off since we had no idea Ripley would survive in Alien or even be the hero

I'd love to see David discover in the map room the home of the xenomorps and the three make a pack to destroy it before it becomes a threat to human colonization.. if or when they get rescued.. of course the company catches wind and tries to bring them back and then we get our real Alien film..

POSSIBLE SPOILER:

I was very excited until I broke down, gave in, and read the entire plot synopsis last night, spoilers and all. It sounds good, but not ground-breaking. There are NO direct references to the "xenomorph," only the assumption, from what we know as movie-goers, they engineered them. It seems the only "DNA Prometheus shares with the film Alien," which Ridley Scott has spoke of, is that it happens to occur in the same fictional world with Weyland as a corporation and a replicant much like in the original Alien.

I got the distinct impression they don't bother answering most, if any, of the questions they raise in the film. I'm still going to see it. I just think if one spends months listening to conjecture about what a movie is about, you shouldn't have to leave the theater feeling you just sat through two and 1/2 more hours of conjecture and still are not sure what it was about.

@Goomba why the [frick] are you still obsessing over me? You just can't seem to go on an article without mentioning my name, It's pretty [frick]ing creepy.

And I have Blade Runner in my top 20 favorite films of all time.

Xenomorph Prime aka Proteus has already been established as their origin planet... it could be interesting to see Weyland expand the world-building aspect which the viral site has been going into great detail in explaining... perhaps Weyland tries to survey the planet build a colony before discovering the xenos

antonio - 5/30/2012, 3:57 AM
@Goomba you obviously don't understand Ridley Scott's films. It's pretty freaking obvious that he puts more into the themes than the characters. And Antonia? Damn dude, you are totally original! You should do stand-up!

@ckal just look at the hunger games that was crap but most critics liked it....scarface,alien ,the thing ,shawshank redemption, predator, robocop and many more where not like by critics when first released.
antonio
antonio - 5/30/2012, 4:06 AM
@Goomba most obvious case is Alien. It was mostly about the universal themes and big worlds than Ripley. Whereas Aliens was the total opposite. Am I going too fast for you, child?
