Reviews Are In For THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - Part 1

Over the course of last night and this morning, most outlets have posted their reviews for the penultimate instalment of Lionsgate's Hunger Games saga. Find out what the general critical consensus is and see some pics from the red carpet première in London last night.

It seems Lionsgate have another winner on their hands with The Hunger Games; Mockingjay - Part 1. The film has received (mostly) high praise from critics, but there are some negative reviews floating about also. Overall it's described as a thrilling, emotionally engaging build-up to next year's finale...but the cliffhanger ending has come in for some backlash, much the same as The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug's did last year. Still, it currently sits at 86% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Here are some quotes.

Variety:

The series' two-part finale gets under way in solid, absorbing if not exactly inspired fashion."

Cinemablend:

Finds its success in meaningful themes, character-driven story, and smart execution, and ultimately creates some impressive depth for the phenomenon franchise."

About.com:

Thrilling, heartfelt, and a terrific curtain-raiser for the final battle, Mockingjay Part 1 takes the Hunger Games series to new heights even as it sings in its own voice."

Forbes:

"As terrific as that first act is and as mostly entertaining as what follows is, Hunger Games: Catching Fire part I is half of a single story and mostly concerned with setting up however the series ends."

THR:

"Like an overgrown and bloated trailer for a film yet to come, Francis Lawrence's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 spreads perhaps 45 minutes of dramatic material across two far-too-leisurely hours."

More at the link below. Here are some snaps from London's red carpet première, which was attended by Jennifer Lawrence and co-stars Elizabeth Banks, Natalie Dormer, Jena Malone, Julianne Moore, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Sam Claflin and Jeffrey Wright.

This series is so cheesy.

The names, the themes, the whistle thing, the three finger salute, even the title font; I don't buy any of it.

That being said, the director's doing a pretty good with what he's been given.

Reviews sound ok, I mean they would never start talking shit about this franchise when they're about to close, that being said all THG are just plain awful movies.

These films are the antithesis of cheesy. Every single thing about them flies in the face of the conventional "plucky hero against a odds" narrative, and that's prob why so many people don't like them. They're used to the superhero structure and that's just not what this story is.

The scene in the trailer with the kid that says "are you here to fight with us Katness" - THAT is the exemplification of why I can't see these.

Hunger Games brings out the worst in its talented cast. I'll not subject myself to the torment again thank you.

Why the hate? Is it because most of you adolescent [frick]s get insecure about a woman in the lead role that doesn't have a dick in her face? "it's a guuurl. So it must be for guuurls. And because I'm still very insecure in my sexuality, I'll best hate on it..."

Or is it because there is a love story? Like in EVERY superhero movie ever made?

Looking forward to the usual classy and eloquent responses.

I don't like this kind of films not because are "the antithesis of cheesy", but they're pretty bland and generic.

Alien 3 -assembly cut- is the antithesis of cheesy.

Unoriginal plot + Uninspired direction = This franchise

I liked the movie better when it had Arnold Schwarzenegger and was called The Running Man. Or when it had Japanese kids and was called Battale Royale. They were rated R and the major characters weren't a bunch of pussies.
