The Hollywood Reporter were at the Visual Effects Society Production Summit over the weekend, where Fox’s president of post-production, Ted Gagliano, revealed that Will Rodman, the human lead of the film, as played by James Franco, was only saved from death by reshoots that took place only a month before the film hit theaters.

Gagliano explained that initially, director Rupert Wyatt and the scriptwriters planned for Rodman to die at the conclusion of the film’s final setpiece, but was reprieved at the last minute, with Franco and Andy Serkis being called back for reshoots over the Fourth of July weekend.

The surprise hit of the summer, and in my opinion the best movie of the year so far, has one more surprise up it's furry sleeve. Instead of having Caesar and his army of apes just takeover the forest, and Will letting go of Caesar there was almost a darker ending. There was to be one more battle in the forest and Will was going to sacrifice his own life to protect his friend, Casear. Check out the script below for how it all would've played out.

Just watched this last night, I like the ending as it was. The self sacrificing Will was too typical. He sacrifices and then that pushes Ceasar off the edge. I like the way it ended...simple and powerful. Can't wait for a sequel. Easily the best Planet movie.

Damn they should've had *that* ending. Sounds a lot more badass. Though I'd prefer Caesar to not talk as much. Hopefully they'll at least have this as an alternate ending in the DVD's special features. :P

Doesn't that count as a spoiler to know who will not be dying in a movie?

This ending is too cheesy and it would've caused Caesar to literally go all "ape shit" - pun intended lol and he wouldn't have that Emperor mentality since he would be all shook up and enraged by his fathers death.

The ending was perfect the way it was. This is one film that set up its sequels PERFECTLY! Thank God they decided to change it for whatever reason.

BRING ON THE SEQUEL ASAP!!!

@st1s- True! Ha!

Thought the movie was pretty solid and the way the credits rolled will give them any excuse they need for Will to be dead for the sequel. Loved the way they wrapped it up.

I glad they changed it; the one above is inferior.
Also, I think it's interesting how close to the premiere date a studio can change a film and can it in time for distribution.
Did Lucas know about this when making Star Wars 1,2&3?

glad he didnt die. The 'Caesar is home' line was truly one of the most epic pieces of cinema I've ever seen, and a sequel would need some human interaction, which hopefully will be provided by James Franco as Will Rodman. They could kill him off in the sequel though, and then set up a film set in the future or something.

Maybe they could have tied the storyline to 2012, if it'd been possible to release the film in amazing quality within a year, so the 'end of the world' was actually the ape revolution.

I LOVE the "Caesar is home" part of the movie. Just wish Serkis said it in a slightly more gravelly, croaky voice. It would be more believable.

How unbelievably cliche. I don't know how scriptwriters can write this crap with a straight face. Even worse that they were actually going to use it. The one they ended up with is much better.

I was thinking that he was going to die when I was watching the movie because that is what happened in the original film Caesar loosing his father figure and all. I am glad he lived though.

Ceaser, I'm going to take you home.

Ceaser leans in close to Will's ear.
