Rupert Wyatt Reveals Why He Decided Not To Helm DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

2011 was a great year for 20th Century Fox as they found themselves with two incredibly successful - in terms of box office and critical reactions - new franchises thanks to Rupert Wyatt (Rise of The Planet of The Apes) and Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class). It was a shock then when we learned that neither director would return for the respective sequels to each film. Vaughn decided to adapt Mark Millar's The Secret Service, but why isn't Wyatt back for Dawn of The Planet of The Apes? "I had a take on the sequel which didn’t marry with the Studio’s [take]," he told What Culture in a recent interview. "Regardless, I was hired to direct Rise of the Planet of the Apes against all odds, and I was given that opportunity by a studio and producers who were prepared to take a chance on me. For that I’m very grateful." As for whether he's spoken to new director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) or knows anything about the new direction of the sequel, he revealed: "No. Matt Reeves is a Filmmaker, and a very good one, so I’m sure it has."

Fox has hired great directors to replace Vaughn and Wyatt IMO.

And Marvel changes its directors constantly, so why is this a negative thing?

ToTheManInTheColdSweat, how can you say that the films are "retarded" and "complicated" without having read the script? We know virtually nothing about "Dawn", whereas DOFP is based on one of the X-Man comics most popular storylines.

This film was so awesome, hope the studio didn't make a mistake when they didn't get him to write the script again.

smh... All my hopes for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is now gone. I though he left because of the time constraints, not because Fox didn't want to do what he wanted to do with the story. How stupid can you be Fox? Rise of the Planet of the Apes was BRILLIANT and my favorite movie of 2011. It was so good because of Wyatt's direction. Why would you screw with that? So so so so so dumb.
