Ryan Reynolds Lands Another Comic Book Movie Role

Though the actor is still working on Green Lantern, he's all set to portray an undead agent of the R.I.P.D.

Collider.com has revealed that actor Ryan Reynolds will star in the live-action film R.I.P.D. (a.k.a. Rest In Peace Department) based on the Dark Horse comic series. The information came from an interview with Hollywood producer Neal Moritz, who is involved with the R.I.P.D. film:

Collider: Which goes back to what I was also going to go to, Ryan Reynolds.

Neal Moritz: "Yes, we love him. We’re going to do two movies with him. We’re doing The Change-Up with him and we’re doing R.I.P.D. with him."

What was the 2nd one you just mentioned…R.I….

" R.I.P.D. Rest In Peace Department. A terrific script by Manfredi & Hay at Universal that we hopefully going to make at the beginning of next year. It’s terrific, based on the graphic novel. It’s about two cops, one recently dead and a gunslinger who’s been dead for hundreds of years who work on the Rest in Peace department - which is the police department of the dead. And they basically…it takes place on a normal day and it’s about trying to keep the dead quiet."

That’s a very interesting premise.

"Terrific script. Great buddy comedy. Buddy Action/Comedy."

So is that an R-rated movie?

"No, it’s not. It’s a PG-13 movie."

And so it’s Ryan Reynolds and you’re still figuring out who the…

"Yes, he’ll be teamed with somebody but it’s a fantastic relationship between a cop who’s recently died who would do anything to get back to his wife. And a gunslinger who died hundreds of years ago who has seen it all and is jaded by it all and it’s the two of these guys together and it’s the relationship between these two guys that is absolutely fantastic."

With Ryan and the fact that he has Green Lantern and also I believe they’re going to try and make a Deadpool and other things.

"Yeah."

How hard is it to book his schedule at this point?

"Well, this is…luckily for me he’s going Change-Up for us in October and then R.I.P.D….R.I.P.D. is his favorite project. It’s the thing he wants to do more than anything and we’ve scheduled that for January."

The R.I.P.D. comic series, created by Peter Lenkov, is owned by Dark Horse Comics. The publisher categorizes the trade paperback as a science fiction, action/adventure story. Their description of the series is as follows:

Welcome to the Rest In Peace Department -- the devoted, yet dead, officers of divine law enforcement "patrolling the deadbeat...reporting to one boss." Yep -- THAT boss. Nick Cruz was murdered by an unknown assailent, at the height of his personal and professional life. Now he's traded a hundred years of service to the R.I.P.D. in exchange for a shot at finding who killed him. Unfortunately his search will take him to Hell and back -- literally!

This would be the fourth comic book character role for Ryan Reynolds; the first three being Hannibal King (Blade Trinity), Wade Wilson (X-Men Horridgens: Wolverine) and Hal Jordan (Green Lantern). If he lands one more, Reynolds will be tied with the other comic book movie go-to-guy, Chris Evans.

@miltoc- not actually. Chris Evans is still leading.

Ryan Reynolds:
X-Men
R.I.P.D.
Green Lantern
Blade

Chris Evans:
Captain America
Fantastic Four
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
The Losers
TMNT

So Ryan will have to find one more to head on with Chris.

Okay, this HAS to be a response to Evans being cast as Cap. It's an all-out CBM-role war at this point.

It's on!

Hockey Fight Pictures, Images and Photos

They need to duke it out at some point though, and the winner will be given the entire Marvel and DC universes to choose who they want to play from, no limits :)

Hey this is cool Ryan actually fits this role more than his previous and current ones. He will knock the ball park on this one but hopefully he will make us GL fans proud.

@rockingrich1webb I like your avatar and TMNT was animated movie so technically Chris didn't played the role :)

@rockingrich1webb

I'm with Miltoc. Personally, I don't exactly count TMNT since it was animated. And if you wanna be that specific, deadpool and wolverine are two completely different movies so Ryan and Chris WILL BE tied if Evans is in fact Cap

Tyler, I'll take that bet!!! I'm pro-Evans. I was very frightened in the few weeks before he was chosen as to some of the other's being considered. While Evans is certainly not my first pick, I see how good of a pick it is.

I would think a producer wouldn't want an actor who is connected with another major character for their CBM.I can understand wanting a "name" in the movie, but there are plenty of "names" out there.
spectre1983
spectre1983 - 4/2/2010, 8:02 AM
My only concern is that he's going to get all these comic book roles and he's not going to want to reprise the good ones in future films, i.e Green Lantern or Deadpool.
JLanphear
JLanphear - 4/2/2010, 8:12 AM
As long as Green Lantern is an awesome film, I'll be satisfied. He is REALLY putting these roles away, though. That much is certain. I just wish he had as much passion for playing Hal Jordan as he seems to some of these other films. . .
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 4/2/2010, 8:13 AM
@ el bicho

well, they can't make GL and Deadpool at the same time, lol. and they always said GL was filming first. so...after GL! but, by then, i think people will be sick and tired with deadpool, considering how Marvel is stuffing him into EVERY single book they make. over-saturation is the best way to kill a likeable character...go to ANY comicbook site and read the comments people post in deadpool articles...most comic fans are already tired of him. i know i am, which is a shame, because he used to be awesome!

Marvel just went fell-retard with him, and you never go full retard.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 4/2/2010, 8:16 AM
@ spectre

more than likely, he's already signed on for sequels to GL and Deadpool. everything is a franchise these days.
DaenerysTargaryen
DaenerysTargaryen - 4/2/2010, 8:17 AM
So who do you think is more overrated Ryan Reynolds or Sam Worthington?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 4/2/2010, 8:23 AM
@ starsapphire

sam worthington, mostly because i don't think reynolds is overrated at all. he's a good actor. worthington isn't bad, but i don't think he deserves to be "the next big thing" in movies, and thats what it looks like he's becoming. and when you have an actor with a heavy accent, and he has trouble hiding it, then, to me, he is not THAT good of an actor.
skullboy
skullboy - 4/2/2010, 8:36 AM
Next up, Ryan plays Spawn in the sequel.

Ryan is no doubt overrated. Hollywood has made him their new golden boy at it gets a tad annoying. I'm not fan of the guy even though I'll be seeing Green Lantern, but lets see other guys getting a piece of the pie too.
