One of the best kept secrets in all of Hollywood has been, who is Benedict Cumberbatch ("Sherlock") playing in Star Trek Into Darkness? If you look below you'll see that Entertainment Weekly has spoiled the surprise with the headline "Kirk & Khan." So, it looks like Cumberbatch will be playing the classic Star Trek villain, originally played by Ricardo Montalban ("Fantasy Island").

Khan Noonien Singh is a fictional villain in the American Star Trek science fiction franchise, portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán. The character first appeared in "Space Seed" (1967), a first season episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, and reappeared as the antagonist in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

According to the backstory provided in "Space Seed", Khan is a genetically engineered superhuman from India who once controlled more than a quarter of the Earth during the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s. After being revived from suspended animation in 2267 by the crew of the USS Enterprise, Khan attempts to capture the starship, but is thwarted by James T. Kirk and exiled on Ceti Alpha V to create a new society with his people. In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, set fifteen years after "Space Seed," Khan escapes his exile and sets out to seek revenge upon Kirk. - wikipedia

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
