STARFLEET ACADEMY #2
Title: The Edge

Publication Date: December 28, 2010
Plot: A new beginning - but the same old problems.
Jim Kirk arrives at Starfleet Academy ready to take on whatever challenges arise. Most new beginnings mean you get to start with a clean slate, but Kirk quickly discovers that he is already infamous among his classmates. Thanks to his bravado and boasting that he'll finish the four-year program in three, they've already made up their minds about kind of rival he is... and how they will beat him.

The Academy's program is extremely rigorous and uncompromising. The students are the best and the brightest, and the school demands total commitment from them – physically and mentally. Kirk is ready for it all, but he didn't expect that some cadets will do anything to ensure they succeed at the Academy, no matter the cost.

He soon finds that his best friend, McCoy, is one of the main suspects in an Academy misconduct investigation for crimes that could cost the lives of his classmates. Kirk is determined to clear McCoy's name and unmask the dark side of Academy life – before it's too late.

Spock is not in the cover because he's barely in the story. As well he should. Because this is pre Star Trek reboot.

It is safe to assume that Kirk and Bones are already best of friends. Kirk knows Uhura quite well. Scott is nowhere near the academy at that time. Nobody knows him. As for Hikaru Sulu and Pavel Chekov, there is no clear reference, so they can write anything about them. They can be made to, at least, know Kirk, Bones and Uhura. And they all, at the very least, know Spock.

However, it is very clear that Kirk and Spock don't know each other very well at that time. They know each other by name, but that's probably it. There is no chemistry between them, because the beginning of the development of that chemistry is the main thing of the reboot movie.

No chemistry, no adventure. They wouldn't be involved in an adventure together that closely for them to know each other's character more than what's shown in the movie, which is, like, none at all.

So, for these books to make sense, when the story is about Kirk, Spock can't be there too much. And when the story is about Spock (if there is, later on perhaps) Kirk can't be that much involved. Which is pointless in my view. Because Star Trek IS all about the chemistry and adventures of Kirk, Spock and Bones.

So, I'll pass.

@tea: LOL! Funny as hell. School of Spock! It doesn't make sense, but funny nonetheless.
