No, Godzilla does not stomp Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and the rest of our Rebel heroes during
Rogue One's final moments. He doesn't blast Darth Vader with his atomic breath either. Instead, the King of Monsters makes his presence felt in a much different way.
During a recent interview on
The Star Wars Show, director
Gareth Edwards revealed how they cleverly slipped in a Godzilla-related Easter Egg, along with a reference to his first film entitled "
Monsters".
"There's some Easter eggs in Saw [Gerrera's] cave, there's some cave paintings. One of them is of the creatures that were in my first film, called Monsters. And I think there's some M.U.T.O.s and Godzilla painted somewhere in there." He then added,
"I didn't ask for it, it's just they did it as a joke. And I came in one day and spotted it, it was like during the middle of a take."
Of course this Easter Egg shouldn't be taken out of context, for it was just paying homage to Edwards' previous films, much like J.J. Abrams paid homage to
Star Wars by adding the R2-D2 cameo in
Star Trek. Still though, just the thought of Godzilla in a Star Wars film sends shivers down my spine. I mean, how would they even cope with a force like that?
Anyhow, Edwards, during a separate interview in France, was asked about whether or not we'd see Princess Leia make an appearance in
Rogue One. The 41 year-old director responded saying,
"I don't want to ruin it for people." You can take that however you want, but when the Disney/Lucasfilm movie hits theaters in less than two weeks, all questions will be answered.
