KINGSMAN's Taron Egerton Reveals Exactly How Close He Came To Starring In SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

Solo: A Star Wars Story was by no means a bad movie, but it didn't quite live up to expectations when it was released back in 2018. Behind the scenes issues saw Lucasfilm fire directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller midway through production, with filmmaker Ron Howard enlisted to finish the movie in time for its planned May release.

This shakeup led to something of a muted marketing campaign, and even in the wake of movies that earned billions of dollars, Disney struggled to generate excitement for this spinoff revolving around the iconic character.

Underwhelming box office numbers followed, and while many fans have remained hopeful for a sequel, neither that nor the promised Lando Disney+ series appear to be on the way from Lucasfilm. Alden Ehrenreich had the impossible task of following in Harrison Ford's footsteps, and while he did a great job, it was always going to be tough living up to his predecessor.

Of course, Ehrenreich wasn't the only actor in the running, and Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton was among those who were also considered to play Han.

Talking in the video below, the Welsh actor confirms he took himself out of the running, but not before he came extremely close to heading to a Galaxy Far, Far Away. "I felt that that's...I'll be honest, I got on the Falcon. I was with Chewie. I was in the full costume," Egerton reveals. "I felt like I got there, I did it, I lived it, and there was another round that I decided not to do."

"It's far enough in the past now I feel I can say that. It just felt, to me, I didn't feel it. You're following Harrison Ford. No one ever wants to follow Harrison Ford."

Ehrenreich learned that the hard way, though he does now look set to bounce back with a role in Marvel Studios' Ironheart. Many Star Wars fans hope to see him get another shot at playing the young Han, but Lucasfilm is seemingly moving away from recasting its most famous characters based on what we've seen in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

I can’t see how he would’ve made a passable young Han Solo.

@tylerzero - well neither did the actor they ended up using. Like he said, Ford is a hard act to follow.

All I know is if he really does end up playing wolverine he better dye his hair dark

@campblood -

Remember when everyone wouldn’t accept this guy because his hair was the wrong color?

@tylerzero - to me being James Bond is about his upbringing , style, and personality not what he looks like. I got a decade of a tall light brown haired wolverine in the films. Now I just want the comic accurate guy that’s not 6’4 and has black hair

@campblood -

As someone who's well under 6'4" with black hair, I personally do not disagree with you.

@tylerzero - irony is that I’m a 6’5 tall dude with brown hair that looks like a Bigfoot

I don't think he would've made a good Han, but I do kinda wanna see him in a similar role. Could really see him as Kyle Katarn or Dash Rendar

I think ALden Ehrenreich did a good job, but I still would have gone with Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver, West Side Story, etc), who was also a finalist for the role.

I still think Solo is going to be "the one that got away" years from now. That movie was much better than it got credit for - and honestly, I think suffered from blowback from the crappy trilogy SW film that came before it - and should have received a sequel. But Disney was so convinced that their last trilogy film was better than it was that they couldn't see the real impact it had on what followed it and ended up blaming Solo entirely.

Just inaccurate and unfair criticism.

@Deckacards - Phil Lord and Chris Miller are the ones they let get away. Instead of firing them and making the completely generic and all around “meh” movie they did, they could’ve had something truly different and special with Lord and Miller.

Although looking at how the nerds responded to Ragnarok and Love & Thunder, maybe the absurd comedy it sounds like they were planning with Solo wouldn’t have been appreciated either. But I know I would’ve liked it a lot more and I bet time would’ve been kinder to it, just like I’m sure time will be kind to L&T as well.

I kind of liked Solo honestly. If it wasn't for Last Jedi or the BTS drama I think it would of faired out OK. I did like the movie though.

Still don't know why people think Taron would so do well as Wolverine, he'd make a much better Hank Mcoy/Beast imo.

(Ironically enough Alden Ehrenreich was one of my frontrunners to play Logan had he not already been cast for a different role for Ironheart).

"You're following Harrison Ford. No one ever wants to follow Harrison Ford."

PRECISELY.

The only one who got close was River Phoenix who embodied him beautifully in The Last Crusade.
But that was a MUCH younger Indiana Jones so that wasn't an issue.

In SOLO they gave us a Han Solo only 10 years before A New Hope. He would look like Harrison Ford just a little bit younger.

I would prefer if they had just done facial replacement (de aging) with Ford's face and a young actor doing the action.
Marvel De-aging is phenomenal. They could have done that easily as I was saying before they even released the movie.

Alas....

@TyrantBossMedia - Solo should have been a game or animated series.

@TheSuperMex - I can handle that idea.

@TyrantBossMedia - How do you feel about Anthony Ingruber? He played a young Harrison in a film called Age of Adeline. He rose to fame as an impressionist, but he's more than that. Hollywood was impressed so they cast him. I know what people always say. "We don't want a Harrison Ford impression" But Donald Glover basically did an impression of Billy Dee Williams. Not a good one though.

I really think it helps a great deal to actually see an actor who can embody the character. The look is important for suspension of disbelief. Actors have one big tool among others. That mug. It has to be expressive, and it has to make you believe. I couldn't believe Alden Ehrenreich was Han. He didn't look like him, act like him, or sound like him. Anthony did

Ingruber would have been a bit older by the time they filmed Solo so he would have been perfect. Having the face of Han Solo would have been a much better choice. Anthony came close. How do I know audiences would have liked Harrison's likeness? I'm sure you saw the Solo deepfake video

Apparently Disney agrees with the sentiment shared in the comments because they hired that same dude to deepfake Luke.

@DarthOmega - I was always in the Ingruber camp. I would have much rather preferred him.

The deepfake or digital de-aging and face mapping would have been perfect.

@TyrantBossMedia - I think Disney might be going that route for the foreseeable future. Even the voice deepfake. I think it's called Respeecher. They used it for Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show. That show had it's issues, but that voice was absolutely perfect. They actually used James Earl Jones's voice through machine learning to deliver those lines. It worked perfectly. They even blended it with Hayden's on the last episode. That showed Disney does pay attention to some things.

Thought the heist element of Solo was pretty well done at least. The movie just dragged at times.

The guy they got for young Han was good in the role and didn’t feel like caricature.

I think they should’ve had Sebastian Stan if they wanted a more serious take on the character or Chris Pratt for the funnier take on the character.
But it’s too late now and Solo really was a cluster phuck.

Solo was a mediocre and instantly forgettable movie. They should have never gotten rid of Lord and Miller. Whatever they would have made (good or bad) would have been at least memorable. Also they are the kings of taking bad movie ideas and turning them into cinematic gold. And this movie was a bad idea from the start because Harrison Ford is almost impossible to replace in the role.
