STAR WARS: DAWN OF THE JEDI Finds A Writer In ANDOR Scribe, But When Will James Mangold Direct SWAMP THING?

James Mangold's upcoming Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi movie has found a writer who penned some of Andor's best episodes, but where does this project moving forward leave DC Studios' Swamp Thing feature?

At Star Wars Celebration in London last April, Lucasfilm announced that Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold would helm a Star Wars movie focusing on the Galaxy's First Jedi.

That's since been given the working title of Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi and, unlike a long list of other Star Wars projects announced by the studio, it looks like this one might actually happen!

According to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com), Dawn of the Jedi will be penned by House of Cards and Andor scribe Beau Willimon; other noteworthy credits include The Ides of March and The First

Crucially, Willimon wrote three episodes of the critically acclaimed Andor, including the standout "One Way Out," ending with Andy Serkis' Kino Loy uttering that heartbreaking and now-iconic line, "I can't swim."

The trade explains that Mangold will begin work on Dawn of the Jedi once he finishes shooting his Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet. This has to mean he won't begin work on Swamp Thing for DC Studios until his Star Wars movie is completed (pushing it further down the calendar than we know many of you would like).

Last year, Mangold opened up on what drew him to tell a story set thousands of years before any other Star Wars movie or TV show.

"When I talked to some of the Star Wars clerics that keep track of all of these timelines, I was like 'So when would this happen.' And they were like '25,000 years before Episode I,' and I was like 'Oh, I was looking for some distance, but that’s distance.' I’ll do it, I might find Charlton Heston in an abandoned subway station but I’ll do it."

"The reality for me is that that feeling of space, no pun intended, was something that I felt was really important not to get away from fan service or the intricacies of what George had set up and dreamed of," he continued, "but to just have the space to tell a story and not be instantly encumbered with the bases you have to hit."

"Which, honestly, there’s no way to explain it to folks other than to say it’s like that game we played as kids, 'Twister.' At a certain point, you are in a tangle, because you’re just trying to find ways to tell a story with so many constraints that you can."

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi doesn't have a confirmed release date, though we don't anticipate seeing it in theaters until 2027 or 2028 at the earliest.

I want a Swamp Thing movie or show before more Star Wars.

@marvel72 - Me too, but having the Andor writer on this is the best Star Wars news we have had in a while.

@mountainman - but it's called Dawn Of The Jedi,so with Disney track record I wonder who they'll cast as the first Jedi, what box ticking will be involved with the casting.

@marvel72 - I’m certainly concerned. Not only for the low quality of modern Disney output, but also just because there is always a lot of pressure to get an origin story right. It really doesn’t matter what the race or gender of the star is, it’s more about how it’s written. The Andor writer gives me some faith, but I will be as skeptical about it as any other Star Wars content until I see more.

@mountainman - i feel u buddy. I love Andor. Best thing SW has put out in forever and I say that as someone who really loves The bad batch, rebels and ashoka. I hope this movie is good and I trust the writer and director but everything you said about Disney has me worried as well

@AmazingFILMporg - It's my second favourite comic book show.

Netflix Daredevil is my favourite.

@MotherGooseUPus - There is a ton of pressure to tell the origin of the Jedi properly. They now have a good director and writer, but let’s hope that behind the scenes policies don’t interfere too much.

When you really dig deep into it, DC's Lore is unmatched, hopefully Mangold will fully explore not just the horror and dark side of Swamp Thing but actually delve into the concept of The Green...if not in the first movie, then at least in the course of...a trilogy? whatever.

But just like Lucas did with The Force in Star Wars, they better present it as this amazing concept that binds everything together.

Same with the Speed Force.
The Source Wall, The Bleed, The Emotional Spectrum and so much more...aw, man...i dunno if i will ever see these amazing things on the big screen but a man can hope.

The same dude who wrote the 3-parter prison episodes. The same dude who wrote this:

We may be back, folks. (until they're both fired and the film is canned)

@Cap1

What a great scene.

Andor didn't really click all that much with me tbh but shit was well written and just look at that...even well acted.
Shame that Marvel Studios wasted this great actor by making him clown #549 in the MCU.
But then again...

@Cap1 - love the director and writer but concerned kennedy will botch it. I just hope Mangold has a story he wants to tell.....ruining the canon of who becomes the first Jedi and why can be potentially really bad.

Sweet!!.

Dude not only wrote the Narkina 5 arc with Andy Serkis but also this aswell…

We’ll definitely atleast be getting some great dialogue in this “biblical epic” which is how Mangold has described his movie so that’s cool.

Looking forward to it , probably my most anticipated SW film thus far!!.

Mangold sure knows how to pick where he fits in a franchise; he's a smart player like that. Gets in on the very first star wars story, tells Logans final story, tells Indiana Jones' final story, and will possibly get to tell the very first swamp thing story of the DCU. It's a trend, but a smart and calculated trend.

@RedFury - never thought of it like that but that is true.

Idk if you have seen Dial of Destiny but I did and liked it personally

I could see him giving a certain weight to this like he did that with the themes of aging and such while still having that fun adventure feel to it.

I hope he’s able to do Swamp Thing too , his take of it being a Gothic horror film influenced by Frankenstein sounded cool .
mountainman
mountainman - 4/6/2024, 4:11 PM
@RedFury - His Indy movie was a financial disaster. Magold is typically a great filmmaker but that one isn’t something to be proud of.
RedFury
RedFury - 4/6/2024, 5:11 PM
@TheVisionary25 - I did see it, though I can't really remember it... But I think I found it fun lol. I don't think anything can stand up to the originals that Speilberg directed, sans the crystal skull of course. But I think he did a decent job at getting the feeling of what Spielberg laid out. It probably wasn't a necessary film to make, but at least it took the bad taste of the crystal skull out of my mouth.

I totally agree that it would be awesome if he managed to do Swamp Thing as well. He's a talented man, and without any real constraints of a film before it, it could be something very unique. And if it's Gothic and influenced by Frankenstein, on paper that sounds excellent to me!
RedFury
RedFury - 4/6/2024, 5:15 PM
@mountainman - I wonder why it bombed honestly; I don't remember it being horrible by any means. Maybe it's the previous outing that put a bad taste in people's mouths? Or that it really wasn't all that necessary to make, and people just didn't bother?

While I can't say it was super memorable to me (I honestly can hardly remember it) I also wouldn't say it was bad, because I would surely remember that lol.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/6/2024, 5:17 PM
@RedFury - fair enough

Honestly , I have never been the biggest fan of Temple of Doom due to its darker story which veers into just too gross and mean streaked for my liking so i woukd put it before that.

Raiders and Last Crusade tend to flip flop for me for which is my favorite depending on my mood.

I would put Dial as 3rd honestly.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/6/2024, 5:19 PM
@RedFury - I think it’s partly what you said but I also think there’s no real nostalgic connection for the younger generation of you didn’t grow up with it

The audience I saw it skewed older or more families so you are missing out on a key demographic which is the young adults and 20 years old.
RedFury
RedFury - 4/6/2024, 5:25 PM
@TheVisionary25 - that's a fair! I wouldn't know where I rate the first three, I'd have to go and rewatch them again since it's been years. Though I'd probably say Raiders might be my favorite. But Temple of Doom is so iconic to me thanks to the "Kali Ma!" And ol' heart rip Lol 😂. That animatronic shaman and burning heart will forever be in my mind.
RedFury
RedFury - 4/6/2024, 5:27 PM
@TheVisionary25 - it's a good point. I know my parents were all about it, and went and saw it in theaters when it came out. While none of the younger guys in their 20's at work even cared about it, or saw the originals. I eventually saw it when it got to streaming, even as an Indy fan. So yeah the demographic, draw, and change in how we're seeing films were probably all very big factors.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/6/2024, 5:28 PM
@RedFury - oh , it definitely has its moments but it was just always the one I watched the least of the originals

Dial of Destiny doesn’t have much or any moments that reach those levels but I thought it was an emotional and well done coda to Indy’s story overall
mountainman
mountainman - 4/6/2024, 5:29 PM
@RedFury - Like anything I’m sure there are multiple reasons. But I think a big one is just that Indiana Jones isn’t relevant to most people under 40.
RedFury
RedFury - 4/6/2024, 5:30 PM
@TheVisionary25 - I gotta say that I like how you give all these films their fair do. It's always a pleasure chatting with you on here man.

@mountainman - I think you're right. It doesn't hold the same power it once did. Hard to grab the youths when the protagonist could be their grandfather.

I know we had a version of the comic classic "the anatomy Lesson" in the Swamp thing recent Tv show, but we need a big screen version that really set up the audience for the big reveal about the truth behind what he really is and how he reacted to finding out in the most shocking way!

Not gratuitous, but it has to be shown as "justified" what he does to Sutherland.

1.Daredevil
2.Swamp Thing
3.The Incredible Hulk (70/80s)

@marvel72 - I was very impress by most of it. Some of it didn't work out, but for the most part i was pleased.

Did you ever see the early '90s tv show, based of the '80s movie? lol! They are good for a time capsule laugh.
