STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Has Broken Fandango's STAR WARS Ticket Sales Record

Tickets for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker went on sale on Monday, and Deadline is now reporting that the movie has already sold more tickets than any other Star Wars movie through Fandango.

It's even beaten The Force Awakens, a movie which went on to gross over $2 billion at the worldwide box office. Strong ticket sales shouldn't be taken as an indication that it will gross more than previous instalments in the franchise, however, especially as word of mouth and the quality of the film itself will decide how successful it ultimately ends up being.

"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is blasting through all current and upcoming new releases, with massive presales on Fandango," Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis said. "Film fans are excited to see what’s in store for Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo Ren and the rest of their favorite Star Wars characters in this final chapter of the Skywalker saga, especially with director J.J. Abrams at the helm."

Atom Tickets has previously reported that the finale to the "Skywalker Saga" outsold Avengers: Endgame by 45% within the first hour of tickets being on sale, so things are looking good right now.

It's important to note that interest in the Star Wars franchise has waned in recent years, so it will be interesting to see whether the fact that this is the big finale will make a difference to lapsed fans.

Have you guys bought your tickets for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

@Panakin - solo was weak but clearly hasn’t killed people’s interest in the franchise

@Panakin - they didnt lie, it had solid thurs & fri sales. It just plummeted during sat & sun.

Its not as bad as JL where a bunch of people just straight up cancelled their advance tickets

@Panakin - I believe it did for Atoms tickets. 9 sold more than Endgame on Atoms 1st hour. It differs from app or platform but the news will always differ based on the apps being used. Still not a lie though, is all I'm saying. Total tickets sold is determined by the opening weekend though.

@mastakilla39 -
"Atoms 1st hour"

EVERY cinema site had issues processing the Endgame pre-sales, several of them crashed for HOURS due to the volume of people trying to buy tickets. It was so insanely in demand that tickets were being resold on Ebay for $1000's.

I suppose they are referring to the first hour when the site crashed almost instantly meaning Endgame's ticket sales during the first hour were almost non-existant... Gives a flashy headline but its not representative of the actual demand.

Yet apparently despite the examples of demand above for Endgame, Star Wars Episode 9 has higher pre-sales in a shorter time period without issues on ANY ticket selling site, no reselling of pre-sale tickets on Ebay or elsewhere and spaces available for showings still?

I'm calling BS on the idea it sold more than Endgame in pre-sales. The only logical explanation is that they are comparing it with the time in which the website crashed for them and many other sites.

The demand and the proof of said demand for Episode 9 does not seem to exist.

TLDR;
In reality they are saying "This movie has higher sales when compared to that time period when our site crashed and we sold no tickets"

But I was told Star Wars is dead?

@WakandanQueen - it’s almost as if the small Internet forum communities don’t represent the public at large.

Who knew!

I'm really interested in what the eventual box office haul of this movie is gonna be. A 1.4 billion wouldn't surprise me, but neither would 2.3 billion

@MalseMarcel - I'm thinking around Last Jedi numbers worldwide, a solid increase domestic and a solid drop overseas.

@MalseMarcel - I'm not saying it will, but what if it makes LESS than $1 billion worldwide? Would that be considered a "failure" these days for this franchise? 🤔

Before anyone brings up Solo's ticket sales, it's important to note that Star Wars' pre-sales can't quite be compared to any other franchise, since the first day is always way more front-loaded. Not to mention that Solo had like three weeks of pre-sales (Black Panther had 6 weeks), while TROS has two months.

Then why havent they released the ranking for the presales.

Every time an MCU movie had presales within the first day there was a ranking. Endgame was the highest selling ever. Where does ROTS fit into this?

When people say Star Wars is dead they don't mean financially dead. There will always be kids buying toys, it'll never financially die.

What people mean is that it is creatively dead. Or dead "to them". That the only reasons the saga films still exist is to sell toys and merch.

@Nightwing1015 - Plenty of YouTubers claiming the toy sales are dead too.
What they don't mention is that all toy sales are down because kids prefer iPads these days.

@Nightwing1015 - When people say Star Wars is dead they are very regularly referring to it financially, as well as all of the above

Of course, that sentiment has always been wrong, but we don't need to pre-emptively rewrite history now that reality is setting in. They've been screaming for 2 years. They obviously have enough free time and energy to hold the inevitable L

@Nightwing1015 - I agree with your assement of that phrase, and I happen be one of those fans going back to the 70's who now feels this series is "dead to me". Sad, but true.
