After sitting at the top to the box office for the past few weeks,
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will finally be dethroned this weekend by Sam Mendes'
1917.
That movie - which recently picked up shock wins at the Golden Globes for "Best Picture - Drama" and "Best Director" - is expected to debut with $36 million. The awards attention the World War I drama has received will have surely helped boost that number, but it was always likely to hit #1.
Why? Well,
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is way behind with an estimated weekend haul of $16.8 million. The movie is definitely losing steam and not performing as well as previous instalments.
It has broken its fair share of box office records, but it currently sits at $945 million worldwide and is taking a lot longer to crack $1 billion than both
The Force Awakens and
The Last Jedi. It will, of course, reach that benchmark, but it should fall short of its predecessors, something that's no great surprise after mixed reviews (clearly, many moviegoers aren't feeling repeat viewings).
What will you guys be watching in theaters this weekend?
