Steven Spielberg Says No To STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

Steven Spielberg won't be directing the next installment in the Star Wars franchise despite receiving a treatment. Spielberg says the Star Wars films are 'not his genre.' Were you hopeful the acclaimed director would remain in the running to direct Episode 7?

You can add Steven Spielberg's name to the growing list of A-list creator talent who won't no part of the Star Wars franchise. Back when we did the Poll for directors, I left Spielberg's name off the list because based on his filmography, it didn't seem like he would be a good fit based on the films he's shown interest in at this point in his career. However, a decade ago, Spielberg apparently DID want a shot a Star Wars film, here's his words back in 2002 about Episode III:

"I've asked [Lucas]. He won't let me do one. I wanted to do one 15 years ago, and he didn't want me to do it. I understand why - Star Wars is George's baby. It's his cottage industry and it's his fingerprints. He knows I've got Jurassic Park and Raiders. But George has Star Wars and I don't think he feels inclined to share any of it with me."

However, today we have word that Spielberg no longer feels this way stating---

No! No!” “It’s not my genre, the director explained. “It’s my best friend George’s genre.”

So despite reportedly being one of 3 directors to receive Michael Arndt's treatment, don't count on Spielberg taking the gig.
