Steven Spielberg Says No To STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

Steven Spielberg Says No To STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

Steven Spielberg won't be directing the next installment in the Star Wars franchise despite receiving a treatment. Spielberg says the Star Wars films are 'not his genre.' Were you hopeful the acclaimed director would remain in the running to direct Episode 7?

You can add Steven Spielberg's name to the growing list of A-list creator talent who won't no part of the Star Wars franchise. Back when we did the Poll for directors, I left Spielberg's name off the list because based on his filmography, it didn't seem like he would be a good fit based on the films he's shown interest in at this point in his career. However, a decade ago, Spielberg apparently DID want a shot a Star Wars film, here's his words back in 2002 about Episode III:

"I've asked [Lucas]. He won't let me do one. I wanted to do one 15 years ago, and he didn't want me to do it. I understand why - Star Wars is George's baby. It's his cottage industry and it's his fingerprints. He knows I've got Jurassic Park and Raiders. But George has Star Wars and I don't think he feels inclined to share any of it with me."

However, today we have word that Spielberg no longer feels this way stating---

No! No!” “It’s not my genre, the director explained. “It’s my best friend George’s genre.”

So despite reportedly being one of 3 directors to receive Michael Arndt's treatment, don't count on Spielberg taking the gig.

I think he means not his series, because he has directed his share of (mostly brilliant) sci-fi films as Ror said. He probably has too much respect for Lucas to continue his child.

Well, I for one am very happy about this. The last Indy movie was a Goddamned catastrophe.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Lucas and Spielberg worked great on their adventure films before George had a family and became sentimental and comfortable.

With a good writer Spielberg would have nailed it.

Damn it!!

Movie needs heart as well as the action we all crave. Jackson? He got over sentimental with Kong but nailed LOTR. Plus he's a huge fan of Star Wars.

Time to drink heavily into next week......

SS hasn't directed a really great movie since Saving Private Ryan imo. Sure stuff like Munich, Catch Me If You Can, and WOW were GOOD, but nothing compared to the level of brilliance he used to deliver. And don't even get me started on the last Indy movie or the schmaltz ridden War Horse.

He is still one of my favorite directors because of his earlier stuff but I really hope Lincoln is a return to form..and imo he should get back into sci-fi!

I don't think there's any truth about Steven getting a treatment of the script whatosever. Remember, the deal was made in secret, and once it was announced, Lucas said that it was time to give Star Wars to a new generation of filmmakers. Spielberg clearly doesn't fit that bill. Whoever gets to direct Star Wars, it won't be either Spielberg or Copolla, Lucas contemporaries.

Spielberg is trying to promote 'Lincoln', he doesn't want Lincoln overshadowed by the news that he may want to direct Star Wars 7 over Robopocalypse. I think he wants the focus to stay on his current movie: Lincoln.

I'm sure he'll do it with Lucas' blessing.

I'm okay with this. Maybe he will help with producing this. Spielberg's directing work as of late has not been up to par with the expectations that so many of us have when we think of Steven.

I respect his decision to not step on his friend's stomping grounds. Give this to a director that can lead Star Wars into a bright direction for the next 30 years.

After all the Star Wars bashing or the bashing of everyone involved in everything new to Star Wars since 1997 I don't think any A list director would risk getting hit by an infinite online shit storm by those a... who think their opinion mirrors the world's one. (Given the BO results of E2, E3 and E1 3D where everybody knew what to expect [after E1 had hit cinemas years before] and the home media sales, there obviously is a silent majority that likes the new SW, too. But when you look at the internet you only find those whining who don't like it.). Even Lucas himself said: "Why would I make any more, when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?"

So I think the best we can hope for is a really talented but yet quite unknown director with a great love for the franchise to helm the next installment.

I'm fine with that. Remember Indiana Jones 4? He didn't want to do it, but Lucas twisted his arm into doing it, so the movie ended up crap. The last thing we want is for Spielberg to do another movie he does not want to do.

Hopefully, Brad Bird will agree to it!

They will not get an expensive huge A-list director. They will get a NERD. They will go with the formula Marvel is following and find someone with passion for the project.

Whoever directs 7, 8 or 9 it needs to be able work within the Lucasfilm/Disney system and be able to take input (and the system needs to know when to let the director do his job). probably alot like how a Marvel director works within the Marvel system.

I'm hoping that at least 7, 8 and 9 have the same style as the previous films but of course with better dialog.

like the article says, he feels its his best friends genre. he did sci-fi before but this space opera belongs to his best bud and even tho he seem interested (even contributing to ep 3) i think he now is not too sure how he feels stepping into that universe. if he is iffy on the idea then i don't want him in. simple

david lynch for ep 7!!!

Andrew Stanton, Brad Bird or Joe Johnston. All three know how to integrate plot, dialog and cool soundtracks.
