Is Studio Ghibli developing a Star Wars project with Lucasfilm?

Last night, the renowned Japanese animation studio behind such classic as Spirited Away, My Neighbour Tortoro, and Princess Mononoke shared the following Tweet, which certainly suggests that something set in the Galaxy Far, Far Away might be in the works.

Of course, Lucasfilm doesn't only focus on Star Wars-related content (there's also Indiana Jones, Willow, etc), but we'd be very surprised if this mysterious project - be it for the big or small screen - turns out to be anything else.

Studio Ghibli was formed in 1985, and has gone on to become one of the most consistent and well-regarded studios in the world. Five of its films are among Japan's ten highest-grossing anime features ever, some of which have also received Academy Award nominations

This wouldn't be the first time Star Wars and Anime have crossed paths, of course, and there is already speculation that Ghibli might be involved in a second season of the recent Disney+ anthology series, Star Wars Visions. That's certainly one possibility, but we're holding out hope for a feature!

We should find out more soon, but for now, be sure to share your theories with us in the comments section below.

Interesting.

First question: Are we absolutely *sure* that’s really Studio Ghibli’s account? Just asking, what with Twitter being a free-for-all right now.

@Chewtoy - Yep...that one's the real deal, but it is becoming a bit of a joke alright. Several grifter "scoop" accounts are now verified... so even more of their nonsense is going to be picked up.

@Chewtoy - looking into it, they joined Twitter in December 2020. While that seems pretty recent, it's not like it was this year, they have a blue check mark, and they aren't posting anything that seems out of place for ghibli to say. So unless this is an incredibly elaborate troll move, I'd say it's real.

Studio Ghibli I think are better than Disney. Disney were good in their day but they haven't made anything recently that has blown me away.

So Studio Ghibli and Star Wars we could be in store for something special.

They could make a full anime of the first episode of the Star Wars Visions.

@slickrickdesigns - I hope so, making a 15 minute short seems like a waste of a collaboration with such an iconic studio. And hopefully its not 3d like Earwig and the Witch.

Studio Ghibli + Star Wars would be a phenomenal pairing for flight. Their animation has always done an amazing job at depicting the excitement, terror, and joy to soaring high above the ground (Kiki's The Wind Rises, Castle In The Sky, etc.). Taking that to another level with spaceship movement would be gorgeous!

That’s good Star Wars anime special was something new unique to watch Star Wars defiantly need more of that less more of continuation from original series made into sequels and prequels

I just want an anime or a ''cloneWar' type of the Old Republic.

But Lucasfilm is too stupid to use this gold mine..

@RevanOfKrypton - Yeah, that would likely end up being a tie-in promotional nightmare, but we can hope.

It was released… it is a waste of 3 minutes of your time.

For being Studio Ghibli project… it was trash!

It was a [frick]ing screen saver not a short!

If I was Lucas film and paid Ghibli for content and they gave me that, I would have been outraged.
