THE LAST JEDI Director On Mapping Out His New STAR WARS Trilogy; Says He May Not Direct All Three Films

As Star Wars: The Last Jedi's release date approaches, director Rian Johnson has begun to shed a little more light on his plans for a brand new trilogy of films that'll be set in a completely different part of the galaxy far, far away.

While chatting to Collider, Johnson discusses the events that led to Lucasfilm approving the project. As it turns out, there was never any talk of him staying on to helm Episode IX after original director Colin Trevorrow left, and his pitch for the new trilogy basically arose from Kathleen Kennedy wanting to continue to work with him once The Last Jedi had wrapped.

"It was totally separate, it was never in the cards for me to [direct Episode 9]. I was always gonna finish [The Last Jedi] and then hand it off to the next filmmaker. But the idea for the new trilogy was completely separate; it just came because we were getting to the end of this process and kind of getting sad that we had to stop working. But like Kathy [Kennedy] and all the folks at Disney, we were just like, ‘We’ve had a really good time. How do we keep this party going a little longer?

We were just generally talking about what could we do and I was like, ‘What would be most interesting to me is…’ and then I just said—it wasn’t even a specific pitch, the pitch was: ‘A new trilogy. Three movies, one story. New characters, new places. Let’s start fresh.’ That was the most exciting thing I could possibly think of and Kathy really responded to that and we’re gonna give it a shot.”

Johnson goes on to reveal that he's not actually sure if he's going to direct all three instalments of the new trilogy yet, as right now the plan is just to map the entire story out and helm the first one.

It's probably going to be some time before we find out what these new Star Wars movies will be about, but be sure to let us know what you'd most like to see them focus on in the comments below.

I love how quickly Collin Trevorrow’s gig fell apart for 9. That was such a bad choice to begin with. They guy comes off as pretentious and the few big projects he’s been handed really are nothing special at all. All this hype for the next Jurassic World trailer has me scratching my head. The first one was pretty terrible in my opinion.

Bounty hunters, smugglers, ruined Sith temples. Think: Indiana Jones with a jetpack... And maybe the jetpack is actually a semi-autonomous droid partner.

...It's a shame Donald Glover is already doing Lando, because I could really see him doing something like that.

Please just have Luke powerful as he should be and let us see him do something cool with said power and I’ll be good.

I know there's a portion of fans that roll their eyes at every mention of KotOR and of course I don't think Rian is lacking in imagination that he would have to mine stuff from already created content, but if there's anything that category of Star Wars proves it's that different takes on the aesthetic of battle droids/starships/Jedi and Sith is really exciting.

But seriously adapt Kreia though..

@IKidYouNotMan - I'd really like to see a Star Wars series where the main character isn't a Jedi, but a supporting character was. Having Kreia (or someone like her) be someone who survived the Jedi purge or never took sides in it, and then still be a cryptic adviser/supporting character for a non-Force sensitive protagonist would be really interesting.

@Spock0Clock - yes, that a 1000 times. A character that has this expectation or legacy to be a powerful force user but has no natural talent for it, I'm sure the Star Wars Legacy series by Dark Horse played with this early on.

On a side note, I think Rians trilogy will be set thousands of years prior, possibly going in depth to the history of the Jedi and Sith that looks like it's hinted towards by Luke in this film.

@IKidYouNotMan - that would be the best take for Rian's trilogy, being set thousands of years before everything else. Maybe the discovery of the force by sentient beings and how they learn to use it, this leading to the two different religions/factions the Jedi & Sith. Then maybe another director can spin KOTOR out of this Johnson origins trilogy making it a continuing saga but also the history that set the path for the Skywalker stories, the the prophecy and stories told by Palpatine.

@Spock0Clock - Or a Jedi who doesn't want to be a Jedi anymore, has lost his connection to the Force and can barely use it to lift his glass of Hull Stripper, and doesn't care about anything but paying the rent and be left alone.

I know it sounds like Jessica Jones now that everyone knows about her, but I was thinking more Corsucant Nights. Guy who genuinely doesn't want to have anything to do with anything gets pulled in something big and horrible, discovers that he's not a complete shithead, was once one of the best, and has no choice but to go back to doing the right thing… for a price, and with his own code. Or, of course, it could he a she. A personality like Laranth Tarak or Morrigan Corde.

One "Gentlemen, I really don't wanna do this, plus I don't really remember how…" breathtaking scene of lightsaber fighting per movie, that's it. Knight of the Eternal Throne bridge scene under the rain, that sort of thing (3:30 in the following clip).
