Think The New STAR WARS Lightsaber Is Dumb? Stephen Colbert Says You're Wrong

crossguard starwars

There is one aspect of the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer that has caused a good number of fans to voice their concerns. At the end of the trailer, a cloaked figure is seen stumbling through a snow-filled forest, and then this figure, most likely a Sith, turns on his lightsaber. The new lightsaber emits a beam, or beams, from the hilt of the weapon. It seems like an extremely dangerous design as one wrong move could actually slice into the emitter and not their foe. On last night's episode of The Colber Report, super-nerd Stephen Colbert explained how and why the crossguard (or cross-hilt) lightsaber design could actually work.

Star Wars: Episode VII - Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film. It's being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

This doesn't even need a thesis-like dissection in order to prove to people that it is, in fact, practical. Even if it is impractical, who really cares? Star Wars has always placed cool-looking designs ahead of realism and practicality, so why is this such a controversy?

As I posted in another thread. Impractical:

This goes up there with the "Black Storm-Trooper" complaint as stuff that shouldn't exist or be talked about.

Super-weapon with one obvious weak spot? Ridiculously impractical:

The AT-AT was far from impractical. It actually is a stroke of genius in terms of manufacturing.

Creating a machine that moves as if it has two busted legs is righteous.

Haha AT-ATs: Cool-looking. Iconic. deployed in battle. Useful against ground troops. Vulnerable to tripping over large wires.

I love Stephen Colbert and John Stewart. I trust them more than any other major news station.

And that's a nice analysis of how the lightsaber works. It reminds of something that a member of the Wandenreich would wield in Bleach.

With all of the things in Star Wars that are scientifically wrong, people choose a light-saber to complain about? The new light-saber is very cool and the cgi used for the "blades" themselves look really nice and powerful. Really looking forward to this movie!

I've seen people say that he'll cut himself using it, but obviously if he has it he knows how to use it correctly. It's like saying Darth Maul would cut himself; he just used a different fighting style that involved NOT cutting himself.

Colbert is a Boss.

No sensible STAR WARS fan has a deep problem with the saber. A two-bladed saber should be more jarring than a saber with little more than exhaust ports to create a traditional sword look.

Halloween 2016 will see all these phonies rushing out to get the new cross sword saber. GUARANTEED.

This was the same I was thinking when people was saying that the hilt guard would just get cut in half by another lightsaber.

People complain about the dumbest stuff on the internet. The worst thing about it is once one person throws out a complaint, you get a snowball effect of dumb people agreeing with it.
