Bloody Disgusting have done some digging in regards to Warner Bros. planned reboot of the Mortal Kombat movie franchise. Apparently it is still moving forward with director Kevin Tancharoen attached, and they have also managed to uncover some details about the basic premise of the movie..

With Kevin Tancharoen still attached to direct from Oren Uziel’s screenplay, we’ve exclusively discovered that the live-action reboot will follow a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has out of this world powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is.

Tancharoen and Uziel brought us the short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and the subsequent web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy starring Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan. They were impressive enough in their own right but jettisoned many of the fantasy elements in favor of a more realistic take on things. At least this would suggest that they wont be going the same route with the movie. Actually sounds as if they are trying to make this a superhero origin story type of thing. I'm going to assume this "lowly unlucky supermarket employee" will be a brand new character, unless they plan to drastically alter Johnny Cage or Liu Kang or something! But I'm sure those guys, as well as a whole bunch of other popular characters, will turn up to mentor the little fella. It still sounds like a strange way to go about it to me though, what to you guys think?

The fantasy elements were in the web series just slightly played down. If they were absent i doubt Raiden or Kitana or even Scorpion would have made appearances.

The web series is overrated, but I'd take it any day over the plot that they posted above. I think the first movie is the best we're ever going to get.

would be badass if they went with Kung Lao as the main protagonist, but I think it's gonna be Liu Kang. hope they don't drop the sci-fi elements and make this as brutal as can be?)

Sounds awful. I didn't like the web series either.

I'd really really love a gritty, up-to-date version of a Mortal Kombat film. I liked the first two as a kid, but I don't think I would look favorably upon them now. I can't believe this idea was green-lit :(

If this is true then KT and Uziel are the biggest dumbasses to ever do an adaptation.

Just because it's about a guy who works in a supermarket and has to pick between good and evil doesn't mean it's gonna be light hearted people.

That's... not... mortal kombat. At ALL! Jesus Friggen Christ if a studio wants to make a new story than make a new story. Stop attaching older properties to them to pull in thier fan bases an then changing it to something completely different. This trend in Holywood needs to stop.

Wow, this sounds awful.

You would think since the studio waited almost 20 years to greenlight a MK film that it would be true to the game.

But then this guy comes along. I thought his webseries was gonna be good after watching his short film, but as the series went along it just got worse and worse.

I hoped they would've still made the movie knowing people still want it but with a different director and writer. This is gonna be another Street Fighter, or worse, Tekken. SMH.

Way to go WB.
