SyFy To Adapt Arthur C. Clarke’s 3001: THE FINAL ODYSSEY

We recently featured the superb re-release trailer for Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, and now it seems SyFy plan to adapt the fourth and final novel in Clarke's "Odyssey" saga, 3001, as a TV miniseries. More past the jump.

Christopher Nolan recently cited Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey as a major inspiration for Interstellar, and since that there's been a lot of excited re-visitations of not only that film, but the novel from Arthur C. Clarke upon which it's based. Now SyFy have announced that they plan to adapt Clarke's 3001: The Final Odyssey into a miniseries, which is to be produced by Ridley Scott’s company Scott Free and written by Stuart Beattie (Pirates Of The Caribbean, Collateral). The second novel in the series, 2010, was adapted as an underrated 1984 movie from director Peter Hyams, but the third book (2061) was never touched despite interest from Tom Hanks in producing a film around the time of publication. 3001 directly ties into, and resolves, the events of 2001, beginning with the discovery of Frank Poole’s (the astronaut thought to be murdered by Hal 9000) frozen body floating in space.

2001 wasn't actually based on the Clark novel. The script and novel were written concurrently and collaboratively between Kubrick and Clark.

The ideas and the characters as they were portrayed in the new BSG series were quite awesome, with my favorite obviously being Starbuck. The overall story though was not, in my opinion, the greatest. If you've ever seen that chart that shows how it is supposed to flow, it can be very convoluted at times. Regardless, I think it's worth checking out. On a topic more related to the post, I now want to read this series of novels. Also, I wou like some to finally adapt Clark's "Rendezvous With Rama", as I bel it has been stuck in Development Hell longer than I've been alive. We'll probably get 4 more Dune reboots though before that happens.

I read the first two books but there were lots if inconsistencies between them and I believe they get even more glaring in the final two novels. Clarke said it's because they all exists in parallel realities but that's...well, a load of bollocks. I want to read a continuing narrative if it's gonna keep featuring the same characters and scenarios each time.

I definitely appreciate SyFy's interest in adapting literary SF. But this one seems like it could be a very expensive misfire. I read that book in 1997 when it came out and thought it seemed dull and full of mostly recycled sci-fi concepts even then. They're really going to have to re-write that story from scratch to make a compelling mini-series. The book is mostly a glorified "let's take a tour of the future" kind of story with very little character or action-driven narrative. They'd be much better off making a mini-series of the whole Odyssey series. With each installment over four nights covering one novel per night. Stretching 3001 into a 4+ hour event will put the audience to sleep.
