Tom Hardy And Jason Statham In The Running For ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Remake?

They are according to NY Daily News anyway. The site reports that the two British actors are going head-to-head for the lead role of Snake Plissken (played so memorably by Kurt Russel in the original) in the planned remake of John Carpenter's classic..

According to NY Daily News Tom Hardy and Jason Statham are in line to star as Snake Plissken - the role made famous by Kurt Russell - in the planned remake of John Carpenter's Escape From New York. Apparently Jeremy Renner and Gerard Butler had previously been linked to the role in the reboot of the 1981 sci-fi classic, but now it seems production bosses at Studio Canal are keen to land The Dark Knight Rises villain Hardy or The Transporter star Statham to portray anti-hero Plissken. Breck Eisner, Len Wiseman and Brett Ratner have all been attached to the project in the past, but so far no new director has been mentioned in connection with the reboot. We're not 100% on this, so until it's confirmed treat it as a rumor for now.

Why don't they make Escape From London instead? After the riots, that would be much more realistic and exciting than trying to escape from plain old New York.

Not Hardy - already doing Mad Max....

I'd rather see Hardy over Statham. Jason Statham doesn't really blend into any of his roles. Can anyone remmeber any of the names of the characters he's played besides Parker (which was the name of the movie). In Escape he;ll just be Jason Statham in an eye patch. We recognized Kurt Russel and yet we still make a distinction between Kurt Russel and Snake Plissken. I think Hardy would be more in that vein. But his doing Mad Max is kind of a damper on that. What happened to Gerard Butler. I thought he was interested in this.

Dude Kurt Russell is Snake....Love both of those movies, eventhough Escape from LA had some super cheesy moments...but seriously lets just have a sequel. Kurt is still a badass, as DeathProof proved.

I'm [frick]ing sick of Jason Statham, he's just not that good of an actor to put IN EVERY [frick]ING ROLE POSSIBLE, just deport him back to England...

If they cast him, this movie and franchise is dead again.

Not a fan of this remake idea but if they make it Karl Urban or Gerard Butler would be my choice.

Why cant they just use Kurt Russell for another sequel? Snake as a seasoned badass with some grey streaks in his hair might be cool.

Statham and is almost 50, hes 20 years older than Russell in the original. Hardy's playing Mad Max which is too similar.

What the hell is the matter with studios? Just cast Russell in a freaking sequel!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remake: no.
Sequel: yes.
A prequel would be kinda cool. I'd like to see the orgin of Snake Plissken.

No matter which direction you go, these two actors aren't right.

-just my two cents-

If they have to do a remake: Brolin, Hardy or Urban.

Get the team behind Dredd to work on it.

Timothy Olyphant or Jeremy Renner would work out okay as well, but I'm really digging the idea of Brolin as Snake.

No Butler, Holloway or Statham, please.

Gusto, I have to agree with you. We went through this a couple of years ago. There are plenty of new ideas for filmmaking that would wet our appetite as moviegoers that there is no need to butcher a cult classic.

I bet even our fellow commentors have their own ideas that would make for a great moviegoing experience.

@NeoBaggins lol, only afew peeps would know where that is from. They really do need to make a Metal Gear Solid Movie now before the name Snake gets raped by hollywood.

@beanne2099 -- I agree, I can't see Statham in the role. He's a decent action star, not so great an actor. As you said, he'd just be Statham in an eye patch.

That said, I also don't see Hardy in the role. Loved him as Bane -- the only thing I did like about TDKR -- but the role calls for an older, more experienced actor, someone 40-ish, a little grey around the temples.

I like the idea of Brolin playing the character. But I was never onboard with Butler. Like Statham, he tends to play himself in all his films. I've yet to see him convincingly play a real character.

Btw, it would be cool to see Kurt return, but they really need to start fresh and create a more bad ass remake with more sequels, not just stop at LA. A prequel would be nice too though, but just reboot it already. I wish John Carpenter was involved in some way, like producer or something.

Why can't this just be a sequel? You're not going to write a better story than the original. You won't see better casting or acting than the original. You certainly won't see better film direction or better sets than the original. Why waste everyone's time involved and a ton of money? Do a sequel. I'd have no problem with that, even if we saw a new actor cast as Snake. Sequels let you play around with a basic concept without taking a gigantic dump all over what made it cool in the first place.

Sawyer from Lost was near enough in line with that character... All he needed was the eye patch!!!

Spot on, fettastic. Josh Brolin is the only big name that could carry on the legacy in sequel.

But not in a goddamn remake. People know who this CHARACTER is, if you make a new story about SNAKE PLISSKEN, people will go see it.
