Warner Bros. Sets 2017 Release Date For Steven Spielberg's READY PLAYER ONE

Steven Spielberg's next project Ready Player One has a release date.

Earlier today, Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures, and DreamWorks Pictures jointly announced the upcoming sci-fi action adventure film will arrive on December 15, 2017; just in time for Christmas.

Ready Player One is an adaptation of an Ernie Cline novel of the same name. It follows Wade Watts as he navigates his way through the virtual world of OASIS and following the death of the game's founder, competes in a massive treasure hunt against ruthless enemies as he looks to win the grand prize, the founder's immense fortune. Zak Penn (X2; The Avengers) penned the script adapting the novel.

Spielberg is expected to begin work on the project following the completion of The BFG, which should be wrapping up fairly soon and hits theaters July 1, 2016. The Academy Award-winning director also has a release slated for later this year, the Tom Hanks-starrer Bridge Of Spies, which lands in theaters October 16.

This book was a blast! I really dug it. Excited to see what Spielberg can do with it!

Really enjoyed reading this book. Since Spielberg is directing (much preferred as opposed to Nolan given the source material) I think this will at least be a faithful adaptation and just a really good flick. Cannot wait to see what happens.

Looks promising, especially with Spielberg directing, one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.

I was looking forward to Nolan doing it but I'm not complaining, I love Spielberg

But then again, Nolan hasn't made anything spectacular since Inception. So yeah, let's go Spielberg!

My question is which Spielberg will direct this? Duel/Raiders Spielberg or Crystal Skull/War Horse Spielberg? Since Jurassic PArk, he didn't make a real great movie IMO.

Give it to me... give it to me now...

Now to figure out the logistics nightmare that will be licensing for this movie... either do this right or don't do it at all... nothing says amazing better than spider-man's mech from his Japanese show fighting mechagodzilla...

So is it like Tron or what?

I'd watch this. If you aren't into video games or 80's nostalgia, the book isn't written well enough to be THAT worth it. But I love that shizzle, so unless the previews look as bad as all Fox's X-men movies or those Katniss movies, I'm down for it.

It's more like... K.

There's a game that is the purest form of virtual reality and it involves all of your senses. You can completely immerse yourself in this game and live your life there (school, cities, shopping... and it's much better than the real world taking place in a desolate future). The game is part Second Life, part World of Warcraft and part Facebook. It contains unlimited worlds and rare items for your inventory that draw from all influences. It's creator unveils a contest that is a scavenger hunt with 80's themed skill challenges and a Willy Wonka-esque prize for the sole winner. Throw in an evil corporate threat and the nerdy main character's relationships with his online friends and that's the gist of it. If you have any love for anything 80's, this movie is for you.

@fettastic

How about you go read at least the Amazon blurb about it before you judge it. It is an incredible book and in Spielbergs hands could become a classic of our generation. It's that good.

The irony of this film is so hilarious and it has nothing to do with the actual film but Spielberg was going to direct Interstellar and Nolan was going to direct Ready Player One and they pretty much just swapped directing chairs, hah.

This could be awesome. It sounds kinda like 'Sword Art Online' which I found to be very engaging. Can't wait to see how this develops.

I can't imagine how they are going to adapt this for screen. There's one part where the main character has to re-enact the entirety of War Games playing Matthew Broderick's character.
