Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to fly into theaters tomorrow (it's already playing in some locations), and while the DC Comics adventure held on in the high 60s for a while after the review embargo lifted on Wednesday, the movie has now dropped to "rotten" status on Rotten Tomatoes.

With over 50 verified reviews counted, David F. Sandberg's sequel currently sits at 55%.

"More unfocused and less satisfying than its predecessor, Shazam! Fury of the Gods still retains enough of the source material's silly charm to save the day," reads the critics consensus.

Not everyone pays attention to reviews, of course, but with Fury of the Gods already tracking for an underwhelming opening weekend at the domestic box office (projections are better overseas), this could wind up having an impact on audience attendance.

Do you plan on seeing Shazm! 2 in theatres this weekend, or did the reviews put you off? Check out our verdict here, and drop us a comment down below.

Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.

From New Line Cinema comes Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!,” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars returning cast members Zachary Levi (Thor: Ragnarok) as Shazam; Asher Angel (Andi Mack) as Billy Batson; Jack Dylan Grazer (It Chapter Two) as Freddy Freeman; Adam Brody (Promising Young Woman) as Super Hero Freddy; Ross Butler (Raya and the Last Dragon) as Super Hero Eugene; Meagan Good (Day Shift) as Super Hero Darla; D.J. Cotrona (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) as Super Hero Pedro; Grace Caroline Currey (Annabelle: Creation) as Mary Bromfield / Super Hero Mary; Faithe Herman (This Is Us) as Darla Dudley; Ian Chen (A Dog’s Journey) as Eugene Choi; Jovan Armand (Second Chances) as Pedro Pena; Marta Milans (White Lines) as Rosa Vasquez; Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead) as Victor Vasquez; with Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place Part II) as Wizard.

Joining the cast are Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), with Lucy Liu (Kung Fu Panda franchise) and Helen Mirren (F9: The Fast Saga).

The superhero sequel is set to hit theaters on March 17, 2023.

A 50% is still considered good for a DCEU or Sony Spiderverse film lol

Wow are my expectations low

@mastakilla39 - it's time we boycott our beloved genre until they realize their model is no longer efficient for maximizing profits and they start slowing down and refining the recipe.

@mastakilla39 - saw it in IMAX, easily 8.5 of 10...WW spoilers not fully revealed in commercial. Hope part 3 comes out! Yeah....made for teens and young at heart, but aren't we all part of that demographic?!

Just watched and I liked it regardless of that score. Liked it more than Quantumania if I have to be honest. 🤷‍♀️

there's a good chance only 2 of the 8 live-action cbms this year even get a fresh

I knew it. New strategy is to collect positive reviews first to boost the score and then release the bad ones right before the film releases in hopes they saw the high score before they saw the awful scores.

100 review and it's at 55%. It will be in the 40s when it's all said and done .

This film is gonna flop and discourage people even more on the DC brand.

Looking like The Flash or Guardians 3 will be CBM winner this year.

The flash looks awful and it stars a child predator.😑

@TheRationalNerd - low bar to clear but yeah, those seem to be the only decent live-action ones this year

@TheRationalNerd - Guardians 3 will do well, but overall, the cbm burnout is finally here with the general public.

The MCU has squandered a lot of the goodwill they built up with Phases 1-3, and WB/DC is...WB/DC lol.

@Feralwookiee - I feel like "burnout" is when the audience gets tired of a genre even if the films are quality. I don't think that's happening, if CBM's this year were at Winter Solider/Dark Knight/Spider-Man 2 like levels, the audience would still be here. Agreed, on the state of MCU & DC.

@ridah - I agree, i think its more than we haven't had much amazing CBM since the 2020s started, so if you don¿t give the audience great movies, they arent gonna be inclinded to return.

Like i mentioned in another post here lets look at the 2020s Marvel/DC CBM films so far

2020
Birds of Prey
New Mutants
Wonder Woman 1984

2021
Black Widow
The Suicide Squad
Shang-Chi
Venom 2
Eternals
Spider-Man: No Way Home

2022
Morbius
The Batman
Doctor Strange 2
Thor 4
DC Super Pets
Black Adam
Black Panther 2

2023:
Ant-Man 3
Shazam 2

The 2020s so far has had a higher ratio of movies that have underwhelmed, than films that were beloved.

Like you said if all of these movies had been amazing, but people weren't watching, then at that point we can start to seriously consider the possiblity of superhero fatigue/burnout, but thing is that DC, Marvel and Sony have not been putting their best offerings lately, so if you don't give the audience good films, then they aren't gonna come back, give them good movies and they will come back for more
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 3/17/2023, 1:35 AM
@AmazingFILMporg - So you're going to still watch the performance given by a predator?
AmazingFILMporg
AmazingFILMporg - 3/17/2023, 1:51 AM
@TheRationalNerd -

Not gonna financially support a groomer cause he makes money off the boxoffice. Won't put money in his pockets so he can fly little girls out to his house😐....
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 3/17/2023, 3:53 AM
@AmazingFILMporg - I get that, and you're totally respected for that but what about everyone else that worked on the film? Also, why even watch a performance given by Miller if his actions leave such a bad taste in your mouth? lol Sounds like you shouldn't watch or support it seeing he's heavily featured in the film. Just saying...
