When Warner Bros. made some changes to its DC slate, The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ended up being pushed into 2023. The bad news was accompanied by some good, though, as Shazam! Fury of the Gods was brought forward to this December, with a bold release date that meant it would go head to head with Avatar: The Way of Water on the 16th.
The Avatar sequel stole the show during Disney's CinemaCon presentation, and it appears Warner Bros. has had second thoughts about trying to compete with James Cameron's 3D epic.
As you can see below, it's been confirmed that Shazam! Fury of the Gods will now open on December 21 instead of December 16 as previously planned. While there's only a few days between them, it should help the Shazam! follow-up avoid being completely overshadowed at the box office.
However, given the competition posed by Avatar: The Way of Water, it's unlikely the DC Comics movie will ever reach the #1 mark domestically or globally.
Despite this minor delay, Shazam! Fury of the Gods heading our way this December is a major bonus for fans seeing as it was previously scheduled for next June. Footage from the sequel was showcased by Warner Bros. earlier this week, confirming that Gal Gadot will appear in the sequel as Wonder Woman (and, unlike Superman, we'll actually get to see her head).
Shazam! Fury of the Gods will arrive in theaters on December 16 December 21.
