SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Stills Tease An Epic Fantasy Adventure; New Details On The Wizard's Return

Warner Bros. released a new trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods yesterday, and thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we now have some new stills from the upcoming sequel.

There's nothing too revealing here, though we do get a better look at the Daughters of Atlas. They're joined by a dragon that promises to be a formidable opponent for Billy Batson's superhero alter-ego, and when director David F. Sandberg was asked about the creature, he explained the importance of making it unique.

"It was also trying to figure out, well, how can we do it differently?" the filmmaker explains. "We've seen a lot of dragons in Game of Thrones and The Hobbit and everything. But this is from mythology. It's a dragon that's sort of made of wood because he's born from a tree."

In the same interview, Sandberg talked about Djimon Hounsou's surprise return as The Wizard. The character was thought dead following the events of Shazam!, but the director explains that the resurrected hero finds himself spending much of this adventure with young Freedy Freeman.

"One of the things that turned out so great was pairing [Freddy] up with the Wizard," Sandberg says. "In the first one, you had Freddy playing off of Shazam, and now, you have Freddy and the Wizard. The Wizard is the ultimate straight man, just very serious, and then you have this kid who's just annoying and talks the whole time."

We're certainly intrigued by what role The Wizard will play beyond his team-up with Freddy, though we don't anticipate his presence doing anything to set up a meeting with Black Adam given The Rock's recent farewell to that role.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word "SHAZAM!," is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam.

Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy - aka Shazam - and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.

The sequel's cast includes Zachary Levi as Shazam, Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Adam Brody as Super Hero Freddy, Ross Butler as Super Hero Eugene, Meagan Good as Super Hero Darla, D.J. Cotrona as Super Hero Pedro, Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield/Super Hero Mary.

Djimon Hounsou returns as the Wizard, while Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, and Helen Mirren have all joined the movie as newly created villains.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to be released on March 17, 2023.

They really should stop with the clean shaven look

@Taonrey -
Probably easier for CGI if he's clean shaven and helps emphasize the similarities between him and his younger form.

Personally I think Billy aging is more of an issue, the emphasis between his younger and adult form was the main appeal.

@Taonrey - all times I saw Shazam in comics he never facial hair it’s comic accurate

@dragon316 - I don't care if it's accurate, Zach looks weird

@Scarilian - that makes sense, still think Zach looks weird. They should have cast younger for billy. Someone between 8-12 would have made more since for a trilogy.

Just saw he trailer this morning. Yyyyyeahhh, probably was a good idea not to put any more money into marketing this.

I know that if I live long enough, I'll end up seeing this for free somehow, but if I don't, I really don't think I'm missing much. There's no reason I really need to see this as a comics fan.

I saw everything I might need to see in the first one.

This one's obviously just a filler episode.

@ObserverIO - ''This one's obviously just a filler episode.''

And that's not a problem per so in my opinion. Right now, I think I even like those kinds of movies (like the first two Ant-Man movies) more than the big team-up events

@bkmeijer1 - I didn't mean filler like Ant-Man. I loved those movies too. And the first Shazam movie.
I meant like a filler episode of an early '80s TV show kind of filler.

Like this is just utterly disposable.

In movie terms, I guess it's kinda like Superman III but without Richard Pryor.

@ObserverIO - I doubt it will be disposable. Characters will have arcs that lead to come differently out of this movie than they went in.

That said, it feels kinda pointless though with a reboot on the horizon.

"and then you have this kid who's just annoying and talks the whole time." Thank you sir for letting me know and I'll be skipping this now for sure. Annoying kids is not my idea of a fun way to spend my time. I like Shazam and want to see Shazam. Don't care about Billy or his family like at all. This doesn't even look like goofy fun anymore like the 1st one minus 3rd act which was meh. I am just so annoyed and bitter towards DC now. Been a DC guy since I was a youngling but I can't anymore with what this studio has been doing.

Although Shazam fighting Black Adam would be fun too, I actually look forward to this a lot more. I can read about Black Adam in the comics, but I don't recall ever reading anything about the Daughters of Atlas or dragons.

Which mythology says that?

I got no hate for this movie but I also got no love for it. This is a pass for me. Even if it was for free I wouldn't watch it.
