UPDATE: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Joins SIN CITY 2; Won't Star In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

It has been confirmed that The Dark Knight Rises star Joseph Gordon-Levitt has concluded talks with Marvel Studios for the role of 'Star-Lord' in Guardians of the Galaxy, but he will however play 'Johnny' in Sin City: A Dame To Kill. UPDATE: We now have the press release from Dimension Films.

Deadline has broken the news that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed up to star in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, the Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller helmed adaptation of the latters graphic novels. He will reportedly take on the role of 'Johnny', a part which was at one point offered to Johnny Depp. Gangster Squad star Josh Brolin is also said to be one of several actors that the studio are courting for "tough guy" roles in the sequel. Unfortunately, the site goes on to reveal that the talks between Levitt and Marvel Studios have ended and that he will NOT take on the role of 'Star-Lord' in Guardians of the Galaxy. They are now "evaluating" their other candidates.

New York, NY January 7, 2013 – Dimension Films announced today that Joseph Gordon-Levitt (LOOPER, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) is joining the all-star cast as one of the lead characters in the highly anticipated SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. The film is the follow up to co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s 2005 visually groundbreaking film, FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY. Other major casting announcements will continue to follow.

Gordon-Levitt will play “Johnny,” a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game.

"Johnny is a new character in the Sin City world and we are excited for what Joseph will bring to the role," said Rodriguez and Miller.

Gordon-Levitt most recently wrote, directed and stars in DON JON’S ADDICTION which will premiere this month at Sundance and also stars Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR weaves together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales in which the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more repulsive inhabitants.

The ensemble includes already announced original cast members Academy Award® nominee Mickey Rourke as “Marv,” Jessica Alba as “Nancy,” Rosario Dawson as “Gail,” and Jaime King as “Goldie/Wendy” with new cast members Dennis Haysbert as “Manute,” and Jamie Chung as “Miho”. Production is underway at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

The original SIN CITY broke new ground with its iconic stylish look. SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR will not only bring fans back to the world that Miller and Rodriguez created, but also add a new dimension by bringing their unique visual style to life in 3D.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR was developed by Frank Miller based upon his graphic novel, with a screenplay by Miller and Academy Award® winner William Monahan (The Departed). The film will be released by Dimension Films in the US and Canada on October 4, 2013 and is produced by Robert Rodriguez’s Quick Draw Productions, Aldamisa, AR Films, Miramax and Solipsist.

Although I'm slightly disappointed that he's not going to be star lord, I hope he gets a much bigger character marvel studios are going to introduce.

I love JGL as much as the next guy but him not playing star lord is good news, just like the casting of him as batman, he just doesn't have the stature or presence. He's a small framed guy that belongs in a more sleek, cunning role, not brooding, tough or commanding.

Unfortunately? Sorry, but contrary to popular belief, JGL does not need to star in every single movie being made right now.

You make a good point Jollem. However if you were here a few years back you would know the true fans from the posers. We are just few and far between now unfortunately

Wait... so what will be his role in Sin City? Who's "Johnny"? I always thought Depp was considered as Wallace from the "Hell and Back" storyline? JGL seems too young for that part. Then again I haven't read any Sin City books in years, so what do I know...

Hurm, I'm confused now. @_@'

Jollem@ I've never realy been that interested in checking out GOTG, either. I got into them a bit, in the '90s, accidentally. Blame Silver Surfer for that. But since Annihilation came out (which is the whole new version of GOTG that the movie will be based on), I've been wanting to check that out, but when you get old, you're not so fast anymore. I think it must have been a couple of years or something 'cause they're making a movie, already.
Although I dunno, because they haven't made a Wonder Woamn movie, yet and that came out quite a while ago, now. So maybe they did just read the comic and get the sudden urge to make it. But yeah, my point... my point is that I don't think the comics even been out long enough for people to have a chance to read it yet.
Or maybe my point was taht I'm so old that by the time I get around to reading it, people will already be on here complaining about how the third movielet thetrilogy down and raped their childhoods.

I think Carrot Top should be cast as Star-lord

Plus what's all the hate on JGL? Is it just because he was in a movie involved with Chris Nolan?
I think Marvel should cast him in atleast one of their movies and not just because I'm a fan, but because he's a good actor; and I feel he could fit somewhere in the cinematic marvel universe.

JGL is my favorte actor of this generaton so I look forward to seeing him in anything -- but I really wanted to see him in the MCU...

And wasn't Johnny Depp up for the role of Wallace instead? Is Wallace going to be in this?
TheAmazingSpidey63
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 1/7/2013, 7:05 PM
That sucks. JGL would've been good as Star Lord (or possibly Nova), but good for him getting that role in Sin City 2. But here's a good chance for either Rosenbaum or possibly Pine to get the role as Star Lord. :)

OK ok ok enough with the what is GOTG talk?!...Im sure Im not the 1st to remind most of you that GOTG is very very needed to involve Thanos..The purple guy at the end of Avengers. It is troublesome to think that many like the idea of Thanos coming to the screen but second guess GOTG. The 2 go hand in hand and is a very good way to flesh out the story of Thanos... Yes we do need a good actor for Starlord the leader of the group but also Drax back story must be dealt since his soul purpose is to destroy Thanos.
The only challenge I see with GOTG movie is getting general audience connected with these characters I guess thats why Marvel is feverishly trying to get the best lead actor for Starlord role.
Well whoever they get he must be a homerun for CBM guys and general audience
