Sony officially announced British actor Andrew Garfield as the new face of Peter Parker for the Marc Webb-director reboot, back in July. And now speaking with Jay A. Fernandez of THR | Risky Business on his experience at the Telluride Film Festival, Fernandez gets a few answers from Garfield, on his future as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, approaching the role, and prep work.

Have you been prepping for Spider-Man?
"I have been waiting for this phone call for 24 years, for someone to call me up and say, "Hey, we want you to pretend to be a character that you’ve always wanted to be all your life, and we’re going to do it with cool cameras and cool effects and you’re going to feel like you’re swinging through New York City. Do you want to do that?" [laughs] “Let me just consult with my seven-year old self and see what he thinks...” So my seven-year-old self started screaming in my soul and saying, This is what we’ve been waiting for. Like every young boy who feels stronger on the inside than they look on the outside, any skinny boy basically who wishes their muscles matched their sense of injustice, God, it’s just the stuff that dreams are made of, for sure. It’s a true [frick]ing honor to be part of this symbol that I actually think is a very important symbol and it’s meant a great deal to me, and it continues to mean something to people. So yeah, I feel like I’ve been preparing for it for a while. Ever since Halloween when I was four years old and I wore my first Spider-Man costume."

What's your approach to wrapping your brain around the coming shift in terms of your increased visibility with Spider-Man?
"Not to give it credence, not to give it any of my energy. Just approach it like any other job that I care about deeply. That may be naïve of me to think that I can just get away with that. But if you give focus to something, it will grow. I just want to be an actor, really. And of course all those things came into consideration when I was making the decision. But at the end of the day, I had faith that I would be able to not be defined by it. And I still have faith that I will be able to get lost in roles and just keep doing what I love to do."

Have you gotten any advice about how to balance it?
"I’ve witnessed other friends go through it, so I’m aware of the pitfalls, for sure. So I already feel as prepared as I can be, and also no advice can really prepare you for something so visceral."

Is there any other prep work you’ll need to do? Will you need to change your physicality or do training?
"I’m sure there will be a bunch of that, yeah. Flexibility is my main focus right now. Making sure that I can be as flexible as possible. It’s all kind of starting up so I haven’t really got much to say about it."

You start shooting in December, but are you planning anything else after or in the meantime?
Yeah, sure. There’s a film that I really like that I shouldn’t really talk about. I really want to do a play afterwards. I was already thinking, "How am I going to offset this experience and create equilibrium within my system after this incredibly big thing?"

Director Marc Webb & the studio are currently on the search for supporting roles, in which Ophelia Lovibond, Lilly Collins, Teresa Palmer, and Emma Roberts are being looked at for the Spidey's main squeeze. And Sony has July 3, 2012 set for Spidey's return in 3D!

I saw Parnassus again today. he is one of the good young actors. This reboot should be fun and colorful, not with apoligizing villains, but still willing to go places.

Good article DCMF.

I can't wait to start seeing stuff from this movie. I hope this new one will get it right. The Raimi ones were good, but I always felt there were so many things missing.

I hope the villains are villains. None of that repenting crap. Let's see some badassery and maybe a cliffhanger.

Considering they have said they aren't going to focus as much on villains for this one and more of Parker dealing with his powers, I wouldn't hold your breath much.

Solid choice. Great up and coming actor. I really did like the vibe he was putting out in the interview as well. I'm not really a fan of reboots(but then again I wasn't a big tobey fan to begin with), but I'm still looking forward to seeing what he can do with the role.

Awesome find DCMF! I wasnt sure at first, but I'm now convinced that this guy will make an awesome Peter Parker/Spider-Man! I just hope that the script isnt based too much off the Ultimate universe because although there are plenty of good things they could take from that series, I dont want to see the mutated Green Goblin or Carnage Gwen Stacy! :P

@ joshw

i agree i hate some the ideas in the ultimate spidey universe the hulk goblin, carnage gwen stacy & electro design.

i want it set in the proper spidey universe.

but saying that the spider-man noir storyline would make a fantatsic trilogy.

and if he cuts his hair , he loses at least 10 pounds! makes him crawl better against the walls.
I hope it's gonna be good, but I'm not looking forward to the movie.... spidey 4 with gwen and PP, would have been better!

Ignoring his 80's hair for a moment, am I the only person who notices a surprisingly close resemblance of his face to the original Amazing Spiderman face of Peter? His facial expression, particularly the eyebrows, looks exactly like the original Peter, in my opinion.

He seems like he really really loves the character. Ive had enough of these actors who get comic book roles and say "Well i never really read comics as a kid".

F that. I want actors playing my heroes to be like me, fans. This guy seems like he will do everything in HIS power to make a great Spiderman. Lets hope everyone else does their part..

ON RAIMI'S RUN....

NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH RAIMI'S TAKE ON SPIDERMAN, SURE EVERY MOVIE THAT BECOMES A FRANCHISE WILL HAVE A FUMBLE HERE AND THERE, SOMETIMES DEMAND AND MONEY GROW SO MUCH THAT SOMETIMES YOU LOSE SITE OF WHERE YOU STARTED...

RAIMI'S RUN WAS FULL OF SOME TRULY CINEMATIC LANDMARKS, SOME TRULY SPIDERMAN MOMENTS THAT JUST RANG "SO COMIC BOOK"..

..COME SPIDERMAN 3, EMO PETER WE COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT...BUT VENOM..

...GEEZ THAT WAS ...WELL I'LL JUST LEAVE IT AT THAT.

BUT IN MY OPINION, I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE RAIMI REDEEM HIMSELF, I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE THE LIZARD IN SPIDERMAN 4, HEARD HE WAS GOING TO DO THE VULTURE INSTEAD, WITH A VULTURE GIRL SIDEKICK..I ACTUALLY FEEL HE WOULD HAVE DONE THE LIZARD GIVEN THE OK BUT I THINK THE STUDIOS WERE DICKING HIM AROUND TOO MUCH, MAKING HIM THROW IN THE TOWEL...I DUNNO IF THE NEW ULTIMATE STYLE SPIDEY WILL DO AS WELL...TIME WILL TELL.

I hope the costume looks great and they get the colouring right. This spidey has got to be really amazing with great flexibility and more wall crawling and web slinging. This is MARVELS chance to get it right so do us all a favour and don't [frick] it up!!!

I have faith in this reboot...just on the director and casting choice so far...because i'm not a fan of tobey or raimi as an actor or director but there spiderman was great , the first two anyhow, the third one is where everything pretty much went to hell and sony screwed up any chance of tobey and raimi coming back...can't wait to see some of the footage on this one too i bet it'll be top of the line stuff

This kid looks a little too goofy for me. I know Peter's not that good looking, but he's average.

I don't think Spiderman deserves a reboot.
