As Sony Pictures' Kraven the Hunter movie continues to round out its cast, we have an update on which actress the studio could be courting to play Calypso.
We first learned that the Marvel Comics villain would be a part of the Spider-Man spinoff when a rumor swirled that Jodie Turner-Smith (Without Remorse, Queen and Slim) was being courted for the role, but the trades recently confirmed that no deal was struck. Now, The Illuminerdi is reporting that Taylour Paige (Zola, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) is in line to play the character.
In the comics, Calypso Ezili was a ruthless voodoo priestess who is actually the one responsible for giving Kraven his enhanced abilities. The two became lovers shortly after, and Calypso often fuelled The Hunter's hatred of Spider-Man, convincing him never to lose sight of his prey. After cheating death many times, she was seemingly killed off for good in the late '90s.
How she'll be depicted in Kraven remains to be seen, but there's always a chance the murderous villain will be tweaked a little for her live-action debut.
Aaron Taylor Johnsen will play the titular anti-hero, with Russell Crowe on board in an undisclosed role (possibly Kraven's father). White Lotus breakout Fred Hechinger recently joined the cast as Chameleon.
J.C. Chandor (Triple Frontier; A Most Violent Year) will direct from a screenplay from Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man; Uncharted) and Richard Wenk (The Equalizer; Jack Reacher: Never Go Back).
