Sony Pictures continues to assemble a talented cast for its upcoming Madame Web movie, and the latest addition to the (so far) all-female ensemble is Isabela Merced.

No details on her role were provided, but the 20-year-old Transformers: The Last Knight actress will join Dakota Johnson in the title role, along with Euphoria breakout Sydney Sweeney and Ghostbusters: Afterlife's Celeste O'Connor.

Based on the Marvel Comics series by Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr., this latest "SPUMC" movie is being developed as an origin story for the clairvoyant hero, "whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world."

Very little has been revealed about the project beyond this, but Deadline does mention that because "Madame Web never actively fought any villains," the film "could turn into something else."

From what we can gather, Sony Pictures is looking to introduce its own take on Doctor Strange.

In addition to the most recent Transformers film, Merced has appeared in the likes of Sicario: Day of the Soldado and Instant Family. She also played the title role in Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) will direct from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Madame Web was recently given an official release date, and is set to hit theaters on July 7, 2023.

@dracula - It was WEIRD how good she was in Transformers 5, to the point that I wanted to poke my head through the screen and tell her "Kid, just stop. This bullshit is NOT worth your A-game."

@Waddles - oh my God, don't remind me about the Dora movie. They took a joke from college humor and made it real with zero self awareness.

If this ends up being the first SPUMC movie I watch 90% of the credit has to go to the casting director.

If you look at the concept art for No Way Home, America Chavez was supposed to appear and she has Isabella Merced’s likeness.

These SMU projects attract good talent but with the Morbius writers attached, I’m worried.

Sony is such a dumb studio at times, they never learn

Just like with Kraven, the cast is the only thing that has me interested in this. Really surprises me how Sony manages to pull in such names for these projects

So Todd Phillips new advisor at DC as whole or just separated projects like Joker???
Menks123
Menks123 - 6/1/2022, 3:01 PM
@Desrow - Sounds like a bad idea, but that might just be me. Think he's an average director and Joker as a whole was not good to me, other than Joaquin in the role.

Hope it's not true.

@Menks123 - nah he’s a good director. He’s has a great eye visually too. Look the cinematography for the hangover movies.

Menks123 - 6/1/2022, 3:25 PM
@micvalpro - I think he is alright but not someone who I think should be an adviser (if it's a huge decision making role) for DC. Especially when he doesn't seem to embrace the material.

But it's WB/DC, they had Snyder at the helm of it before so it's par for the course.

@Menks123 - Is that rumor going around currently? Him being the Feige of dc?
