MADAME WEB: Sydney Sweeney's Role In The Upcoming Live-Action Spider-Verse Movie Has Finally Been Revealed

Madame Web star Sydney Sweeney's role in the upcoming Sony Pictures movie has finally been confirmed after months of rumours, while the actress makes it clear in an interview that she's a huge superhero fan.

As far as we're aware, cameras stopped rolling on Madame Web a number of months ago. However, the movie won't swing into theaters until next January, something we're sure many of you will hope means Sony Pictures is taking the time to get this story right.

With so many female superheroes from Spider-Man's corner of the Marvel Universe expected to make their presence felt, should this team-up drop the ball, it could spell doom for these characters on the big screen (after all, we'd hate to see Spider-Woman go the same way as Morbius).

In terms of who is playing who in the ensemble, we only have rumours to go by. However, a recent interview with Total Film sees the site confirm that Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney will be taking on the role of Julia Carpenter, the second woman to hold the Spider-Woman and Madame Web mantles.

In their report (since corroborated by The Direct), it's stated that the actress "[will] be seen in the flick as Julia Carpenter, AKA the second Spider-Woman."

The actress also teased her Marvel debut, saying: "I couldn't be more excited...I can't wait to be able to be next to the girls that I filmed with – Dakota and Isabela, and Celeste. We had so much fun together. And I'm really excited that it's just gonna be a powerhouse of badass females for the world to see."

Sweeney, who was only 10 when Iron Man was released in 2008, adds, "Superheroes have been my entire life! Those [films] are all my parents ever wanted to go see. I think I've seen The Avengers probably 20, 30-plus times. My family, they love [them]."

"I could not have made them happier choosing to do that project [Madame Web]."

There's a risk all these named characters won't ever actually suit up in Madame Web, continuing a disappointing trend in Sony's Marvel movies. However, if the stage is set for an all-female team of heroes in this corner of the Spider-Verse, there may be a lot of exciting future projects to look forward to beyond this one.

Madame Web is currently set to be released in theaters on February 16, 2024.

@JobinJ - why? Because it stars...women? You misogynist! /s

@JobinJ - it will compete with Morbius

@dagenspear - ...my comment was a joke about how people will automatically call people misogynistic if they say anything bad about a female led movie. Did you miss the /s?
dagenspear

@Origame - I know. I was pointing out how off I think it is to just bring that up when I've seen no one talk about or say that.
Origame
Origame - 5/31/2023, 8:31 AM
@dagenspear - ...that's the joke. Most time people who call others misogynistic are saying that even though they aren't even talking about the fact it's starring women.

@Origame - What he's saying is, no one else was talking about it like that. If the joke was rooted in people talking about it like that...yet no one was saying those things...there was no need to bring it up yourself.

It's pretty easy to say this film is going to suck without coming across as a misogynist. Sony has a shit track record with their live action spidey-verse attempts.

@Variant - the point is that people keep accusing people of misogyny out of nowhere, regardless of the actual criticism, and regardless of if the criticism is valid, simply because it's female led.

Stop acting like this doesn't happen.

The quicker this bombs, the faster we get it on digital. I'm not expecting something amazing, but idc to see it in theaters. The illusion that we should see every superhero movie "just cuz" is idiotic lol watch those "other movies" as well folks

@PlusUltra - It's like they have a Kathleen Kennedy and some things stick while others don't depending on who's film it is and the IP...oh, wait.....

mountainman

@The1st - Between Kennedy, Pascal and Alonso, female studio heads have a pretty bad track record lately.

@mountainman - Same goes for a male studio head or so.
mountainman
mountainman - 5/31/2023, 9:10 AM
@dagenspear - Just trying to joke because of these specific 3. There are certainly male studio heads that suck too. It’s really just these three have a pretty bad track record with CBMs (In my opinion of course).
Variant
Variant - 5/31/2023, 3:26 PM
@PlusUltra - You'd think the path forward is pretty obvious: Sony stick to animated CBMs and video games; Marvel Studios handle the live action films. But who knows what they're working on behind the scenes.

People what this to bomb: "it has nothing to do with women, it's because Sony"

People that want The Marvels to bomb: "you are a bunch of misogynists! You don't want a female empowering movie!"
