Martin Sheen Set To Play Uncle Ben In Spider-Man

Apparently veteran actor Martin Sheen is in final negotiations to play Uncle Ben in Columbia’s new Spider-Man movie...

According to a Hollywood Reporter exclusive, Sheen is close to finalizing a deal to sign on as Uncle Ben, who's death is the catalyst for Peter Parker to start to take his new found powers seriously in the comics. The character was previously played by Oscar winner Cliff Robertson in Sam Raimi's movies.

Sheen, repped by ICM, is a veteran of the screen, having appeared in over 100 movies since 1967. He can be seen at the moment in The Way, which is directed by his son Emilio Estevez. He joins Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as The Lizard(though that has yet to be confirmed).

The Spider-Man reboot will be directed by Marc Webb and will be released in 3D on July 3, 2012.

Actually I think its cool if we forget Uncle Ben and actually skip most of the origin! (Flasbacks)

SHEEN's cool, but if they are, it should be an unknown actor, well not well heard of like Garfield.

LEEE777@ I would prefer not origin movie too. Albert Finney would have been great Ben.

Damn, Martin Sheen is 70.I was kinda hoping they wouldn't go really old with Ben and May.50 would have been a good age.

Martin Sheen kicks ass. A great choice to add to an already great-looking cast if he officially signs on.

all origins should be told in opening credits & flashbacks.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I like Sheen but he would NOT be my first choice for Uncle Ben.

He's still left a bad taste in my mouth after he was so cheesy in Spawn.

@ leee777

the origin was told in spider-man (2002)

i think its still fresh in people's memories.

i hate it when half a movie is taken up with a origin story that everyone knows.

he got bit by a radioactive spider.

I am ok with this as long as its not his ass clown of son, Charlie. Charlie needs a lesson in metallurgy...

I doubt they'll go over the entire origin again, I think we will see Uncle Ben though. Through flashbacks etc And this is an excellent choice!

I think the casting is good, but like most others I hope it's for flashbacks or dream sequences cause we do not need another origin. Otherwise it's basically the first movie all over again
sweetre15
sweetre15 - 11/4/2010, 5:50 PM
@superdog: Not really, because it can still be done in a different way even if it's a full-out origin especially if they develop Peter and Ben's father-son type relationship more.

When I saw this on Facebook, earlier: I thought it said "Martin Short". lol Martin SHEEN is a great choice. Best casting for this film ((so far)) and he's gonna die before the film is half-way done. :(

I think it would be better to skip most of the origins (although the fact that it will have been a decade since the first movies release in 2012 makes that unlikely) but this is a solid casting choice and I for one would be more than happy to see him play Uncle Ben. :)

oooookaaaaayy....huh. Not my first choice, but I can see it working. Mostly I'll echo the sentaments above that we better just see flashbacks. I got no time for a full blown origin gain.

Also, its too bad that some of the recasts point out how great some of the original casting was. See, J K Simmons.

So tired of origins stories especially with a character like Spiderman hell everyone knows his origin even people who haven't seen the movies hopefully this will be in flashbacks.

This is such good news. Martin Sheen is the bomb, still has it, and didn't get into trouble like his son. Class casting. And Sally Field's in there too.

Relax guys, this might be one of them flashback deals, not an origin story.
