According to a Hollywood Reporter exclusive, Sheen is close to finalizing a deal to sign on as Uncle Ben, who's death is the catalyst for Peter Parker to start to take his new found powers seriously in the comics. The character was previously played by Oscar winner Cliff Robertson in Sam Raimi's movies.

Sheen, repped by ICM, is a veteran of the screen, having appeared in over 100 movies since 1967. He can be seen at the moment in The Way, which is directed by his son Emilio Estevez. He joins Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as The Lizard(though that has yet to be confirmed).

The Spider-Man reboot will be directed by Marc Webb and will be released in 3D on July 3, 2012.
