After revealing his secret identity to the world in the comic books, Spider-Man had some serious regrets and ultimately turned to Doctor Strange for help in putting the genie back in the bottle. The same thing will happen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and this latest clip from the movie shows the Sorcerer Supreme performing a spell to make the world forget Peter Parker is the wall-crawler.
However, upon realising that his friends and family will also forget who is beneath the mask, Spidey attempts to make some changes to the spell that cause it to spiral out of control. You have to believe this is what cracks the Multiverse open, but the sneak peek ends before we can learn more.
In the comic books, Spider-Man unmasking would allow that person to then remember their history with the hero as Peter Parker if they'd known his identity prior to the spell. That definitely doesn't appear to be the case in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, hence why the Avenger seems so panicked.
Take a look at this latest Spider-Man: No Way Home clip below:
"For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero's identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk," reads the new synopsis. "When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse."
Among the film's confirmed cast members are Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, J. B. Smoove, Benedict Wong, J.K. Simmons, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx. Based on the new trailer, we can now add Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church, and Rhys Ifans to that impressive list of actors (fingers crossed for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield).
Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in U.S. on December 17 and in the UK on December 15.
