SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY Home Passes $1B Internationally On Its Way To Topping AVATAR's Domestic Total

Spider-Man: No Way Home has now passed the $1 billion mark internationally, and only needs to take in another $25 million in the U.S. to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time...

Spider-Man: No Way Home has proved itself a true phenom of the "pandemic era," as the Sony Pictures threequel continues to assert its dominance at the global box office.

The Jon Watts-directed superhero adventure claimed the #1 spot for the sixth time this week, shrugging off mild competition from the likes of Scream and Sing 2. The movie took in another $11 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic cume to $735.9M after 45 days on release. This means it's only $25M away from surpassing James Cameron's Avatar to become the third highest-grossing film of all time in The U.S.

Analysts believe No Way Home should accomplish this by President's Day, but can it possibly home to catch Avengers: Endgame ($858M) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936M) to claim the #1 spot? That'll be a tall order, but we'd be foolish to bet against this movie!

Spidey's latest solo outing has also swung past the $1 billion mark overseas for a global total of $1.739B, making it only the sixth movie in history to do so without a release in China.

Good work Spidey! Already surpassed my initial guess of 1.6 billion

At this point Disney is pretty much just competing against itself. It's like of like if I cloned myself and we were both trying to go for the same woman. Almost like the movie "Multiplicity" ("She touched my pepe Steve").

I wonder if this will be an example of blockbusters not needing China and will allow for studios to be willing to make less concessions for the CCP

@Ha1frican - It's always going to be a calculation, I think. If Chinese censors don't really have a problem with the movie as-is, then a minor tweak or two (even if those tweaks only appear in the version released in China) could mean an extra 30 million dollars. And most studios won't turn away 30 million free dollars.

The problem is that No Way Home isn't a model that other films can easily follow. It's not like it's popular because of some specific subject matter that Chinese censors object to.

These studios have an incentive to remain on good enough terms with the Chinese government to make a Chinese release possible, and I don't see that changing because of something like this. (It may well be changing for other reasons, though, because the global creative community and the Chinese government are increasingly at odds, and Hollywood won't blackball every Chloé Zhao.)

Broader view, though, I'm not sure this drifting apart is a good thing. Scientific endeavors, art, and sports have been ways to bridge cultural and policy gaps between nations even while their governments have been openly hostile. The people of the world can and should be part of a global cultural community (in my view). Of course, there need to be policy changes (as many governments are openly monstrous), but that end goal of a global community is always what I set my sights on. And enjoying a Spider-Man movie in Beijing or a Stephen Chow movie is Boise is part of that.

@Ha1frican - I think No Way Home is the first movie to clear a billion at the foreign box office without China, so I am inclined to say yes it could be one

@dragon316 - at the worldwide it's not even gonna come clear, but domestically it only needs 30 million. Should be doable I guess

To answer the question in the article. NO! It has no chance of catching Endgame let alone Force Awakens.

@defenderofthefaith - this is true. The holiday Eves landing on Fridays for the first time since Tron legacy hurt. It already dipped below the daily domestic of TFA a few days before but the weekend could’ve recovered if not for Christmas Eve on Friday. Even on Saturday would’ve made more money.

Foreign is killin it. 1.2 billion foreign is my final answer for a good ol 1.9 worldwide.

HOWEVER thank you edit button, if it reaches 770 domestic, then it needs 1.23 billion foreign for that 2 billion. Come on Spider-Mans y’all got this!

In hindsight, it seems it was a smart idea for Sony to push Morbius to April. The film would have cannibalized Spider-Man: No Way Home if the films were competing this weekend. I didn't believe it was a good decision at the time but apparently Spider-Man, even in its 7th weekend, has a lot of life left in it in theaters.

TheWalkingCuban - 1/30/2022, 2:54 PM

I think Avatar is the last bar it will clear after the 1 billion foreign, even if it will take back its place later this year if (or rather, when) it will be re-released.

Don't see it clear Infinity War at worldwide or foreign, nor Endgame domestically.

@Quinn - You didn't want this to make $500M worldwide now you're worried about the domestic total reaching $760M 😂

Wonder Woman Box Office x2: $1.644B

Wonder Woman + BvS: $1.695B

Spider-Man NWH CURRENT Box Office: $1.739B

BvS Box Office x2: $1.746B

Two down, incredibly close to the third and final one. Jon Watts' film is killing it and all of that without China and during a box-office-killing pandemic 😏
