From ABC News, The Broadway League says "Wicked" and "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" both boasted full houses last week, but the webslinger tale took the box-office crown from the Oz musical.

Eight preview performances of "Spider-Man" took in $1,588,514, with an average paid admission of $102.86. "Wicked," which debuted in 2003, snagged $1,588,456 over eight shows with an average paid admission of $109.76.

One difference is that the Foxwoods Theatre, home of "Spider-Man," has 1,930 seats, while the Gershwin Theater, home of "Wicked," has 1,809 seats. Much of the rest of the box-office numbers comes down to their different premium ticket prices.

So despite all of the troubles, it seems things are finally back on track for the musical. Comment in the usual place!

No press is bad press. People will be flocking to this in case they get to see an actor break their frakkin neck! But seriously, its not supposed to be half as bad as the initial reviews suggested. I'd see it..if there was nothing on at the movies:)

I'm glad to read this. it looks like they invested a ton of time and resources to bring Spidey to life as cleanly as possible (in an action sense) so bring on the financial rewards!

lets see how it hold up over next few weeks. how long will it have to play to break even thou??? :DD

it would have to play 60 times to just make back the initial budget. then lets see how much profit it makes.

This reminds me of The Producers, somehow.....

They tried to make a bad play, and it wound up being a hit because it was so bad, people enjoyed it as camp. Could the same thing be happening here?

Anyway, maybe you just had a lot of people that went to see it out of morbid curiosity- like driving out to see a train wreck.

I wouldn't call this a success, I mean Wicked has been on broadway for 7 years and still almost beat out SM. The true colors of this crap will come out and it will get worse in numbers. I feel bad for the actors who are in it because this could potentially be a step back for them.

i wouldnt be surprised if this played on broadway for years and made tons of money. its just the diehard fanboys that dont like this, your regular folks will eat it up.

@Xandera and @Brashlight

get over yourselves, please for the sake of humanity. its making a shit load of money, i saw the numbers last night. stop making excuses and stupid comments like "oh it'll fail soon!" just because it IS ranking in money when you were hoping it didnt. i hate to say it, but i'm actually glad its making money and the plot is barely recognizeable, because if the word out was that the show was flawless you would still bash it just cause your "fanboy sensitivity" can't handle the words "Spider-man" and "musical" being in the same sentence.

grow up, bitches

@lilej2 - I have to get over myself?!... all I read in your comment was "I like to hear the sound of my own voice when I read this back to myself"... so piss off you arrogant troll!!!

updated calculation:

$1,588,514

So we'll be kind and round it to $1.6 million.
Weekly costs for the show are reported to be $1 million a week meaning that they've made $600,000

So its $600,000 a week, or 108 weeks just to clear the production costs. 2 years and a month. Relying on the fact that sales will be consistently at that level every single week for the next 2 years, which they won't be.

Yeah, if that is a hit, I'll eat my own colon.
