Spider-Man: Brand New Day Director Destin Daniel Cretton Signs Overall Deal With Sony Pictures

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Sony Pictures has ensnared filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton in its web, as he's signed a three-year overall deal with the studio. This comes after the record-breaking box office success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

According to the trade, Cretton will develop and produce films for Sony through his production company, Hisako Films. The company's President, Jeyun Munford, will work alongside him.

While the deal does not cover directing, it's said that Sony is "very eager" to get Cretton in the director's chair to helm Spider-Man 5. While it seems highly likely that he'll eventually tackle the sequel, it appears the pact frees him up to work for other studios, meaning a Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings follow-up could still happen at Marvel Studios.

Regardless, both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures will have to wait, as Cretton is busy developing Naruto for Lionsgate. Cameras start rolling next year, with the Short Term 12 helmer behind the camera.

Sanford Panitch, Sony Pictures' Motion Picture Group President, said, "Destin is a very special human, a deeply thoughtful visionary mind, a brilliant filmmaker in its truest sense and a marvellous storyteller who is a master at understanding the cinematic experience. We at Sony are proud to be making a future together and expanding our relationship with Destin, Jeyun and Hisako Films."

Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman added, "Destin is the real deal, and we are lucky as hell to be in ongoing business with him and his team. Po'okela!"

"I had the best time making Brand New Day with Tom Rothman, Sanford Panitch and their team," Cretton noted, "and I’m so excited to tell more meaningful stories that people can experience in theaters around the world."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed $2.452 billion worldwide since opening at the end of July. It was #1 at the U.S. box office for six consecutive weeks, and is the highest-grossing movie of all-time domestically.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter that he may not have the power to control.

But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

In our review, we concluded by saying, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day is everything fans could want. Emotional, hilarious, and heartfelt, it’s an action-packed love letter to the comics and one of Spidey’s best big-screen adventures. Spider-Man has never been more amazing."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.

@ModHaterSLADE - Been showing Naruto to my wife the last few weeks. Her first anime ever (unless you count Avatar) and she's absolutely loving it. We're already 60 episodes in.

Rewatching it, I have absolutely no earthly idea how you could adapt this into a film series. Where do you even start?

@InfinitePunches - I think they could fast-track to the Chunin Exams. Then they could start a trilogy from there.

@ModHaterSLADE - Even if the opening scene is Naruto vs Neji, I think it'd be impossible to squeeze Konoha Crush and the Sasuke Recovery Mission in two and a half hours. (And that's assuming they fly by the Tsunade stuff.)

And then you have to do Orochimaru, Itachi, the Akatsuki, Pain, the Kage Summit, the War, and the Ten Tails in TWO movies. And the amount of backstory necessary to introduce Kaguya is a lot too.

I feel like a lot of my favorite stuff (the Hashirama/Madara dynamic for one) would end up on the cutting room floor.

@OneMoreTime - Destin Daniel Cretton signed a three-year deal with which studio?

Was it Marvel Studios? Or was it Sony Pictures?

Cool , good on Destin & hope this deal works out for him…

I hope we do get him directing Spider Man 5 since he did very well on BND so if he has to give up Shang Chi then so be it though if they do move forward with the latter’s sequel post SW then I wouldn’t mind if Destin is the one that handpicks the new director for it.

Anyway , good luck to him for Naruto right now and hope that film is good given his immense passion for the material!!.

Called it. Sony was going to back up a dump truck of money to this dude’s house after Brand New Day. Would love to see him back to take on a Spider-Man vs Venom movie

Avengers: Secret Wars will introduce the symbiote.

The only way to do Spider-man 5 is that it is a combination of The Death of Jean DeWolff & Kraven's Last Hunt.

Spider-man will teams with Daredevil to investigate a series of crimes. When Dewolff is attacked, Spider-man's relations with the police are damaged, worsened by him proceeding to confront Kingpin in-prison. Daredevil fights Spider-man trying to get through to him, but fails. Spider-man goes to confront the one who orchestrated everything, Kraven, and gets brutalized and buried alive. Spider-man claws his way out the grave, unclear if he was brought back by the symbiote, and faces off against Kraven defeating him and sparing him.

End the film revealing that he was resurrected by the symbiote and this has created a Codex which is calling into space for 'Knull'.

Spider-man 6 would then adapt The King In Black.

@NotMyDiagnosis - I trust Nintendo though. The 2 new Mario movies were great and completely out of the park with their lore, references, and staying true. I watched a small doc about this a while back. After the complete disaster the first Mario movie was in the 90s, Nintendo basically vowed they wouldn't let their IPs get the movie treatment until these new Mario movies came along, but that still took almost 40 years. Nintendo does not [frick] around with their IP at all. The movie will be great.

@JabbaTheSus - man i hope you're right. It just boggles my mind why Nintendo would go to sony of all people, I thought they had a great deal with universal for the mario movies.

Also doesn't this lead to potential problems if they every tried to do a SSB movie? Hopefully they have some kind of movie by movie deal / contract and can take zelda elsewhere if they have to.

@NotMyDiagnosis - I would imagine if they do a SSB movie, it will be animated as the Mario movies are. If that happens, I would assume the rights to animation and live action for Legend of Zelda/Link are probably separate, as they were with Sony and Marvel.

Happy about this development. He earned it in spades and hopefully he can complete his trilogy like Jon Watts did.

Crossing fingers to see the villain be this time Hobgoblin to make Peter dive into his crime board about who it could be and makes us all guess if it's Ned, maybe the debut of MCU Harry or someone else. Spider-Man has never worked with a mystery of who is the antagonist behind the mask so this could be a new thing to make fans discuss until the movie comes out.

And because Spider-Man has one of the best supporting cast in Marvel I'd love to finally see debut the character that not only gives him a run for his money in chasing scenes but also helps him remember that you can have fun while carrying a great responsability. After all he finally heard from MJ's own mouth that sadly she doesn't love him like he wishes she could. That will take some time for it to be reignited properly.

Let Peter meet Felicia/Black Cat and explore something different but all the same rewarding.
