Ahead of this week's launch for Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Marvel sat down with the developers at Insomniac Games for an extended look at the upcoming PlayStation game. In the latest Marvel Live video, host Angélique Roché joins James Ham, senior animator at Insomniac Games and Brian Horton, creative director at Insomniac Games, as they show off nearly 20 minutes of gameplay footage while discussing what this new game brings to the table.
Miles Morales was first introduced in Marvel's Spider-Man, although we only got to play small gameplay segments with the character. It was at the end of the game that Miles revealed to Peter Parker that he, too, had powers. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales takes place a year after the first game and highlights a coming of age story for Miles, who is coming to terms with what it means to be Spider-Man.
"In the beginning, we wanted to make sure that he felt different from Peter. But we also wanted him to feel like he aspired to be Peter. He always looked up to Peter, he was a fanboy," explained Ham. "Trying to find this balance of him being in this role for a year now and trying to have this balance of inexperience but also feeling like, 'Hey, I am Spider-Man. I have to do this. This is my responsibility to be Spider-Man, to be a hero that I need to be.'"
The extended look at Spider-Man: Miles Morales gameplay begins at around the 9:50 mark of the video below. This specific segment focuses on an encounter with Rhino, who we saw in the first game as well. Miles actually had a gameplay segment with Rhino, but he didn't have his powers at the time. In this game, Miles not only has abilities, but we actually see him manifest his first bioelectric power to defeat Rhino and save his mentor.
Mixed in with the gameplay, you'll hear both Ham and Horton discuss various aspects of the game, including the unique creative direction, gameplay nuances, and more. They also discuss the rogue's gallery, a concept that Horton says goes hand-in-hand with Spider-Man.
While the footage above is an encounter with Rhion, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be filled with other iconic villains, including the Tinkerer, the leader of the underground, as well as Prowler.
***Gameplay begins at 9:50***
