SPIDER-MAN 2 Star Yuri Lowenthal Shares His Thoughts On Sequel's Divisive Ending And Peter Parker's Future

Spider-Man 2 ended with Peter Parker seemingly giving up the mantle of Spider-Man, but Yuri Lowenthal has shared his belief that the wall-crawler will eventually don the mask again to protect New York...

In the closing moments of Insomniac's Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker appeared to put his life as Spider-Man on hold, trusting Miles Morales to look after the city in his absence.

Fans interpreted the ending in very different ways, with many arguing it felt like a permanent retirement for Peter before the next game shifts the focus to Miles and Cindy Moon, a.k.a. Silk, protecting New York together.

Talking to Variety (via GameFragger.com), Spider-Man himself, Yuri Lowenthal, was asked how he interprets that and shared his belief Peter will swing back into the spotlight sooner rather than later.

"There have been some comments recently that were picked up to infer that Peter’s out and Miles is in," he said. "While I think that Peter would love to believe that he can just turn it off and not be Spider-Man anymore and live a completely normal life, I don’t think that’s what’s going to happen now."

"I don’t know - I haven’t read a script yet," Lowenthal was quite to point out. "They’re probably still working on it. But I don’t think that’s the last we’re gonna see Peter. I think it’s a cool place to leave it. It’s a cool change for him."

In other words, while Peter will try and live a normal life, it won't last long as he's bound to pick up the mask again. However, the actor has no issue with the wall-crawler putting his trust in his fellow Spider-Man.

"I think 100% he trusts Miles. Miles has really stepped up and he’s like, 'Oh, maybe I can get a little break,'" he explained. "And I did get a vacation to Symkaria during the Miles game. Not much of vacation, but at least at least MJ got to learn to ride a motorcycle, which is awesome."

Spider-Man 2 debuted to positive reviews, only to leave many players disappointed due to what felt like a rushed story and a step backwards in terms of features (New York got bigger, but there was a lot less to do). The sequel failed to win anything at The Game Awards and leaks about original, far more ambitious, plans for the game have left fans scratching their heads.

Insomniac was hacked late last year and that led to information surfacing which suggests we're getting a Venom spin-off and Spider-Man 3 (which could end up being a two-parter). There's still no official word on those, unfortunately, but we're optimistic that news will be shared soon.

Where would you like to see Peter's story go next?

The Miles game is still the best in the series.

@dagenspear - the story, the gameplay mechanics were crisper and animations more charismatic, the soundtrack, the extra costumes are better, the DLC was better, and it's just an all around better in my opinion, and the major of people who reviewed the series. Even if you look up rankings and scores across the board, most rank Miles above the other 2.

It's just a better game.

@TheVandalore - anyways, miles solo game was ok, not the best

Thus, validating my statement

@TheVandalore - Not as great as the first because Miles Morales only had a tiny part.

@marvel72 - I'm not sure I understand. Would you mind elaborating on that sentence?
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 2/28/2024, 8:38 AM
@dagenspear - but I'm not trying to say the other 2 are bad. I'm not even confused or don't understand why others may prefer the other 2, they are the highest quality of games. I just prefer Miles Morales game for a plethora of reasons. Spider-Man PS5 was phenomenal. Spider-Man Miles Morales improved on EVERYTHING, from gameplay to narrative to style and soundtrack. Spider-Man 2 was great too but many agree has issues.

I'm not in the minority in think Miles is the best outing thus far, but I understand we all have personal favorites.

@TheVandalore - Easy, the first Spider-Man game hardly featured Miles so that made it a better game than the Miles Morales game.
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 2/28/2024, 8:43 AM
@marvel72 - oh, you don't like the character of Miles or how they portrayed him in the games?
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 2/28/2024, 8:44 AM
@marvel72 - or just exclusively prefer Pete?
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 2/28/2024, 8:46 AM
@marvel72 - because I like Miles okay in the comics and Spider-verse stuff, but the video games Miles I really thought was a fun and compelling protagonist. First time I felt I hooked into the character. Swinging as Miles just feels different.

@TheVandalore - He has a massive, obsessive hate-boner for the character. He's also a typical anti-sjw schizophrenic so engaging with him is pointless.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 2/28/2024, 3:48 PM
@TheVandalore - No, I think say the story was lacking compared to the first game. Maybe compared to the second game, I may agree in some part. Costumes and soundtrack are debatable to me. Gameplay mechanics may be an opinion or may not be. Rankings by some and opinions don't make it so it's better. I think those are more perceptions.

Yeah, but it still means he's giving up on the idea of "with great power comes great responsibility".

Hell, he still has the antivenom symbiote. He's objectively more powerful now than he's ever been.
kg8817
kg8817 - 2/28/2024, 7:36 AM
@Origame - How many times has Peter given up being Spidey in the comics? Spider-Man No More, the clone saga, Spider-Man: The Final Chapter, etc.

He doesn’t permanently do it except for in Ultimate Spider-Man, and that’s because you have to stop Peter Parker’s heart to get him to stop embracing his great responsibility.

Yuri is saying it right there, because I’m sure insomniac told him without a script. He will never stop being Spidey fully.
Origame
Origame - 2/28/2024, 7:42 AM
@kg8817 - context is important here.

In those stories Peter is shown being in the wrong for leaving his responsibility.

In the game, it's treated as the end of his arc for this game.
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 2/29/2024, 11:48 AM
@Origame - it might very well be the case. But also, he has someone capable of doing the job; delegating isn't being irresponsible.
Origame
Origame - 2/29/2024, 2:39 PM
@EgoEgor - but that also goes against the point of the first game, not doing the job alone.

Also, miles can't be everywhere. So lives are being lost he has the power to save. Which is the entire motivation of becoming spiderman in the first place

We're talking about a video game here, correct? Do gamers get as crazy upset/ignorant about the games that they deem as failures as much as us DCU/MCU/comicbookmovie people get about the shows/movies we loathe too?
dagenspear
dagenspear - 2/28/2024, 5:55 AM
What is really the problem is THAT ABOMINATION OF A NEW PETER FACE! In the animation for Peter. It's a blight on these games and it's retroactively messed with the first one as well with them forcing it in.

Plus the recent games writing I think was poorer and shoddy compared to the first one. BUT, the face is what is being rubbed in our faces.

"But I don’t think that’s the last we’re gonna see Peter" of course he'd say that. Their Miles solo game sold more than 50% less the the first game. They know Pete's the draw but that isn't gonna stop them from trying to marginalise him as much as possible to push the character they want us to like.
Mrtoke

This game had no right to be considered game of the year. We don’t wanna play as civilian Peter and Miles. We also don’t wanna play as Mary Jane. Wanna make her interesting to play as? Make her have a history of gymnastics so she can flip and whatever, similar to Spider-Man. Forget that whore. And what about when venom deep throated her? Wtf was that. Other than that, solid game at most.

I liked the ending, Pete is not retiring as spider-man he’s just going to take a back seat to miles and focus more on his real life than masked life. Give the guy a break will you. I’m sure he’ll still fight crime here and there. Miles proved himself more than competent. Other than that ugly suit he wears in the end of course

kg8817 - 2/28/2024, 7:41 AM
@campblood - You know how they say no one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans?

No one wants to see the character of Peter Parker suffer and be unhappy more than Spider-Man fans. That’s due to most of them being miserable and insufferable in real life.

Like let the dude have a happy ending in some form of media for Christ sake.

@kg8817 - Wow, Dr. Phil is in the house. I didn't know I was miserable and insufferable in real life. I just thought maybe I enjoyed a character I grew up with and not some tokenized replacement.

@kg8817 - our you know, maybe most fans just prefer to play as Spiderman when they play a Spiderman game.
